Hi Jodie,

I bet your looking forward to it now

I went to Salou 8 Years ago and had a brill time. How long are you going for

I don't know how much to take either, and you have to pay charges on the atm's and travellers cheques are just a pain. Think i'm going to take about £300, but it depends how much you drink and eat. We've got half board at our hotel so most of my money will be for drink, ha ha

Hi Jodie,

I think I may take about 500 cash euros and a grands worth of Sterling Travellers Cheques (for both of us) We have got room only so will be eating out for dinner and breakfast. With Sterling travellers cheques you are a few places that you can get them from comission free in the UK and quite a lot of places in Spain will be commission free for Sterling with a slightly better exchange rate then backhome. Euro Travellers cheques will most defo be commission free in the UK but you will pay commission in Spain. Travel agents will advise that you take Euro T/C because they make more money. Take Sterling T/C and it will be cheaper.

Hi,
Yeah might do that then, have'nt really got to take a alot though because half board, but if me and my boyfriend are taking approx £700 then prob worth taking some travellers chqs for safety.
Thanks

Hi Jodie,

Me and my boyfriend are going to Delfin Park on 19th June for 2 weeks. I'm taking a bit of cash for the first day or so and T/Cheques in euros. If you take them in sterling you'll probably get a really low rate plus the hotel charge commission. Last year in Torrie I paid about 2 euros to cash 100 euros. I've heard you can now load up your cash onto a travellers cheque card and don't get charged from the bank as it is not connected.
Whatever you do, DON'T use the exchanges on the street advertising high rates - it's all a con. They advertise a high rate but in the small print it's only valid if you chage up several grand. It was featured on one of the holidays undercover type shows a while ago and a relative of mine also got done by one of the exchanges.

Hi,
Thanks for that i'll have a look into those cards then. Where do you usually get your travellers chq's from because I took Visa ones a couple of years ago and had trouble finding where to cash them. Me and my boyfriend are staying at the Negresco Princess just outside in Cap Salou. Have you been to Salou before?

I would not use Euro T/C if I was you, as the benefits are stacked highly in the favour of those businesses which sell and exchange them.

Euro Travellers Cheques are generally sold commission free in the UK, but at a rate of exchange which is a few cents lower than what you would find in overseas holiday resorts. So during the purchase transaction alone, you may lose around 3%. Then when you cash them overseas, you may be charged another 2% or 3%. If you bring any unused Euro cheques back home with you, the vendor will most probably cash them for you commission free, but at a buy-back rate which could be as much as 15% lower than the selling rate, so it really is a massive loss.

Sterling Travellers Cheques are sold in the UK usually with a fee of 1%. In Salou, holidaymakers can usually cash them commission free, taking advantage of the better exchange rates which are available outside the UK. If you bring any unused Sterling cheques back home with you, the vendor will most probably cash them for you commission free, at face value, so without the prospect of any additional loss.

You are quite right about being careful regarding some exchange companies out there because they may advertise an attractive deal but will in small print (and most often in Spanish) you will need to cash a huge sum in order to benift from the deal. Always ask for a net figure before signing.

Jodie - If you take American Express T/C you will not have any problems cashing them.

Hi Dan, Thanks for that. I'm always stuck really with what t/chqs to take but that's explained it great!

Yes Dan ... very well explained, even if you did copy most of it directly from one of my previous posts :hmmm

Ever heard of plagiarism or copyright infringement ?? Please do feel free to use your own words when posting, or perhaps just give a link to my previous post if that's easier :wink
Jodie ... just in case Dan missed out any important bits, you will find more info and discussion (including the original version of that post) by clicking here.

I'm so angry I got American Express Euro travellers cheques so looks like I'll be losing money - typical

HI Jodie,

I normally buy them from Thomas Cook as they give a better rate if you buy £500 worth, but shop around as most travel agent say they will price match. I've always cashed them in the hotel where I'm staying, they charge approx 2% commission but I feel more secure that way.

I have been to Salou 3 times before with my family & love it there! If you haven't been before I would recommend a trip to Port Aventura but save the Dragon Khan til last as it's the best ride in the park.

Thank you purple star, I can't wait now. I'll have a shop around, but sure i'm going to take Euro travellers cheques. I'm really looking forwad to Port Aventura as I love them parks.
