Hi, dont have any experience myself but saw a tv programe. A man had 15 olive trees and this generated £130 per year once converted to oil. That was in Crete so you may be able to calculate yours from this. Sorry cant be of more help.

We used to have 35 olive trees on our land in Spain and it was very hard work to look after them and gather them in so we let the local goat man have them. He used to bring his family with him and they took quite a few days to pick them all then he would come later in the year and do the pruning.
In return he used to give us a couple of bottles of his home made wine (we thought the goats may have had something to do with the making of this by the taste of it :) ) and a few plants for our garden. He used to take the olives to the co-operative in the village and he was very happy to have the olives to supplement his low income and we were happy for them not to go to waste.

We've recently had a villa built in an olive grove (45 mature trees) on Zante but cannot maintain the trees as we still live in UK at the moment. A local farmer has offered to look after them, harvest them and process the olives. I wonder what would be a reasonable sum to pay him for this! I'm not sure of a) the amount or value of the oil that will be produced or b) whether he can get additional payments from the EU (someone suggested he might be able to).

Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience/knowledge please?

Thanks

If you are not there I would say that you are lucky to have somebody offer to look after them. I would suggest that whatever he makes from the oliv's when it is turned into olive oil let him keep as payment for doing all the hard work for you.

The norm in Andalucia is that you'll be paid a barrel of oil. Olive farmers only survive on government and EU subsidies - he'll make so little anyway from your olives if you asked him to pay it wouldn't be worth his time to do the work.
