Sorry Gemma, it is accurate. Greece and its islands are having a heatwave!

Relax and enjoy!

Hi Gemma

I went to Crete for 2 weeks in July last summer, and we experienced those kind of high temperatures, it was fine though. It's really only a problem if you plan on doing lots of walking and sight seeing
(going round Knossos in 40' did take a bit of doing!) You probably need to stay under a parasol in the middle hours of the day if around a pool or on a beach.

I'm sure you'll have a great time. :D

Thank you for the reassuring comments! Hopefully there will be a nice breeze too. Anything is better than the weather we're having here at the moment!

I went to Paris 2 years ago while it was having a heat wave and that hit 40*. I can tell you that sight seeing around a city in that temp is NOT fun :D
Don't fret too much tho, the greek islands usualy get a nice breeze.

what is so strange with that? for us that is normal. personally i consider it heatwave only if its over 36 or 38 depending if there is North or South wind. So relax. as long as you have a/c or you are next to the sea or pool you are ok. just enjoy the holidays and relax :D 8)

Well, the weather was very mixed. In our first week (end of May/early June), it reached 47 degrees with no breeze and was too hot! Lying in the sun between 10.30am and 4.30pm was out of the question. I was covered in prickly heat and I haven't had that for years. The first half of the second week was much better , it cooled down a bit and there was a nice breeze in the day. Then in the second half of our last week, we had 2 and a half days of cloud and rain which was really disappointing. The locals were shocked and kept saying that between June and September, it practically never rains on Crete. If it does rain, it's usually a quick shower, but this was proper thick cloud and persistant rain. We're going to Parga on 27th May next year, so I'm hoping for slightly more stable weather!

I thought Georgioupolis was lovely. Nice and relaxed, but with enough life so that we never got bored. The people were probably the friendliest I've ever met. We regularly got free desserts in an evening (nice desserts too, not rubbish!). Our favourite place to eat was Neorio's. It's situated across the road from Leonidas Apartments and is just superb. Really diverse menu, high quality and the owner (Nikos) is so friendly. I normally like to eat somewhere different most nights, but we returned here many times.

The Leonidas Apartments are well situated away from the bustle of town (if you can call it that), but within easy walking distance. They are kept really spotless by the maid. It did have its downsides though. The pool area didn't have enough sunbeds and only a few umbrellas for shade. The beds were rock hard. I know Greek beds are not the most comfortable, but these were torture! The first couple of nights I didn't sleep at all and I was waking up every morning with really bad back and neck ache. I spoke to other people who have travelled throughout Greece and even they said that the beds at Leonidas were exceptionally hard. The beds alone would prevent me from returning there, as I dreaded going to bed each night and spent my holiday feeling exhausted! I'm praying that the ones in Parga are a bit more comfortable.

There's currently work going on in Georgioupolis on the sea front to create a nice promenade. This will be great when it's finished, but the sea front is a real mess at the moment (diggers and sand everywhere).

I don't know if mossies are a problem in Greece in general, but Georgioupolis was absolutely full of them. I've never seen so many, even when I went to the Caribbean. I received a few very nasty bites indeed and had to get some cream from the pharmacy as one got infected. I subsequently covered myself in insect repellant from head to toe, wasn't taking any chances! I think there are so many because of all the water surrounding the place. Apparently, there used to be a malaria problem there many years ago and I can see why.

Anyway, I sound really critical and I don't mean to be! Just want to give a real overview. I did enjoy the holiday, despite the variable weather, lack of sleep and mossies! I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Georgioupolis. I wish I could go back tomorrow!
