My friend has recently become quite ill, and we are worried he might not be able to go on holday (we are going at the end of June)....what are the chances of getting our money back if we cancel or even put it to a later date.
We have insurance if this makes a difference
Thanks
*Was his illness present at the time of booking the trip?
* If so did he declare this to his travel insurers?
* Is his GP saying that he is unfit to undertake your upcoming holiday?
Depending on the answers above you may be able to make a claim on the insurance. Alternatively you could contact your tour operator or travel agent and see if they would be able to change your dates - you never know might catch them on a good day!!
Good luck whatever happens

I'll answer your questions
*It was not present at the time of booking
*Therefore he didnt declare it to the travel insurer
*His gp is advsing not to go on holiday..but he is hoping to go
Even though I'm not the one who is ill, can I get my money back as well?
I can't go on holiday myself and leave my friend behind.
He is hoping to be fit and healthy for our departure date, but if not we will try and get a later date or possibly cancel.
One question..do you get charged or anything for changing dates?
To claim on your insurance his GP would have to declare him unfit to travel - And if you are on the same booking you should be covered for canc also.
Also, if you decide to go - Make sure your insurers are aware of his condition in case of any incidents needing medical attention whilst away.
Whilst in Marmaris last week - there were a couple of ladies in my mums hotel who were out there as there son & brother had suffered with a blood clot on the brain - He had purchased insurance but failed to advise them that he had suffered something similar 12 months ago - As a result the claim was declined and they are now facing a 50k bill for med care & air ambulance - The only way they can raise the money is by selling their house. This is worst case scenario - but shows how awful it can get if you dont declare all to your insurers!!!

We were due to go to Mexico for my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. (even though my dads dead) but 6 weeks before we were due to go, my mum saw a specialist about pains in her stomach, it turns out her stomach was in her chest, twisted and wrapped round her lungs. He made her cancel the holiday, as she'd have died on the plane, her stomach would have exploded.
We got a 100% refund!
My auntie and uncle (who got married a week after my parents, my auntie is my mum's sister) were also going, they were still going to go, but 2 weeks before they were due to go, she broke her leg! They also got a refund!
His gp is advsing not to go on holiday..but he is hoping to go
Bazza, I would strongly recommend that nobody should travel against medical advice. It is one of the terms & conditions of all travel insurance policies, therefore should you need to claim, they will decline. If you postpone the holiday, the insurers may also ask for a 'fit to travel' doctors certificate. (did I sound like my dad then? LOL)

If it's the kind of thing where he will get better, I'd suggest rearranging it.
Although it is impossible to say what effect flying may have due to the condition being undiagnosed, the aircraft cabin is pressuried whilst in flight and this can have effects on people. In addition the air in the cabin is to a large degree re circulated albeit mixed with new air but this new air costs fuel to provide and you can guess the rest. Also due to making fuel savings some airlines substantially reduce the cabin temperatures whilst in flight.
These are just some of the oddities that you encounter whilst on an aircraft.
hope this helps
Hi ! We were due to go to Mexico on a Monday and had to cancel on the Friday. My husband had been in hospital with pneumonia and at his outpatients check up was advised not to fly such a long distance. We went straight to the Travel Agent and explained. We had to provide the insurance company with a letter from the doctor and were reimbursed apart from £50. We re booked for the following year and believe it or not the holiday was £60 cheaper so we in fact landed up £10 better off. I certainly would not fly against the advice of the doctor as your insurance would be invalid. As for yourself you are part of the holiday party and as such will be entitled to a refund. Do not delay in contacting your insurqance company as you will be asked on the claim form on what date did the Doctor advise against flying.
