dont know about the rate with cards but i do know that there is a flat commission from the banks of around 5 Euro each time you take money out of the machine. so dont use it a lot as it will be worst than having travellers cheques

Firstly, can I say a big thank you to all the posters that have kept me actively reading this forum over the last few days. You have provided me with some invaluable information.

I am going to the petra mare hotel, Ireapetra in Jul 06 for two weeks. I would like to use my VISA debit card to withdraw cash from an ATM. I have already searched this forum and found a link to a VISA ATM locator site, but this site does not give Crete as a country available to search. I have tried the Greece option but come up with no results.

Could anybody advise if there are any ATM machines in or around (walking distance) of Ireapetra and if they accept VISA debit (NOT a credit card but a debit card with the VISA logo on).

Thanks

You will find ATM's in Ierapetra, it is a small town. Most banks have them, you can also find them in other places like car hire businesses, supermarkets etc. Some supermarkets even offer 'Cash back' like in the UK. I would check with your bank as to what the chages will be as it can sometimes workout a rather expensive way to get money.

In Crete we always take sterling and keep it in the deposit box. The rate in crete for t.c's and bank charges are the only reasons why.

Halifax bank charge £1.50p per transaction. Exchange rate was a bit better than exchange places but not worth bothering about.

JulianProcter, have you tried searching that site for Greece as Crete isn't a country, it's part of Greece :)

I will be staying at the Parthenis Palace on September 9th which is between Malia and Stallis and I was wondering if there are any ATM Cash machines nearby that take Nationwide Flex Account Cards?

If anyone can assist with a personal knowledge of an ATM in this region it would help the member.

My eldest son has just returned from Malia last week and he used his Nationwide flex account card. He was out on the lash last night as most 20 year olds so is still in bed. As soon as he rises from his pit I will ask him exactly where the ATM is.

OK - he has risen.

The ATM that he used was on a shop wall opposite McDonalds on the main strip in Malia.

Hope this helps

Don't believe all you read about high ATM charges. It depends on who you bank with at home as to whether they pass on the charges or not. Plus, you need to look at the whole picture! Don't forget that exchange rates for cash and travellers cheques vary and also that you will pay a commission on travellers cheques!!!

Here's the proof that cash is CHEAPER from an ATM than exchanging at home before you go to Crete.

My wife exchanged some cash and bought 350 euros before going on 29th September. She shopped around for a good rate and got an exchange rate of 1.42 euros to the pound, so she paid £248.23 for her 350 euros.

I was busy at work and didn't get a chance to exchange money before going, so I took what euros I had left from the previous visit and used the cash machines. I went to the cash machine (ATE Bank) on the morning we arrived on 30th and took out 350 euros. On looking at my account (Yorkshire Bank) on my return, I got a far better interbank exchange rate of 1.471 euros to the pound, which more than covered the £8.32 charge that was levied for the exchange. I therefore was charged £246.37 including all charges for my 350 euros, saving £1.86. Cheaper than exchanging cash or taking travellers cheques and paying the commission charges.
