I just returned from Sanford - Manchester, On the way out I had a lighter in my possesion no problem, Whilst in Florida I bought a couple more, When we got back to Sanford airport to return home I was told that I could not take lighters on to the Aircraft, I had them confiscated as I passed through the X-ray machine, When I asked i was told its normal policy, I could however buy matches once through the check in the Cafe area !! Whilst I was browsing the Mytravel magazine on the flight I noticed that I could purchase Lighters from duty free on the plane !!
Is it me ???
Why no lighters but I could carry matches ? why are they available on the flight ??
From memory, the policy is you can carry one lighter or box of safety matches per person, but they have to be on your person, not in bags while going through security. In practice, you're going to keep them in your bag rather than in your pocklet, but thats the policy.
I did actually have them in my pocket but I had to put everything on me into the tray to be scanned, Funnily enough I went to the smoking area upstairs and asked a chap for a light and he produced his lighter !! He said he left it in his wifes handbag !
They are sold on all other MYT flights, however the magazine is not amended.
Yep..afraid its true - the land of the NOT so free - it appears that all lighters are not permitted on USA flights regardless of carrier. Not only is the TSA (Security) at USA airfields not the most friendly iI have reached the conclusion that nearly everything about flying to and from the States these days is a chore!!!
