There is no way this is going to happen but i will ask anyway.
My boyfs dad has asked if we will take some cheese with us to majorca for his dad (who lives there)
I dont want to take it and am not going too, but just want to be reasurred that we cant carry this anyway in our suitcase?
Thanks
Reminds me of about 10 years ago I was on a twenties holiday and one of the guys we all hung around with was expecting a room share chap for the second week. When this guy turned up he had 2 suitcases, one with his clothes and everything in - the other one full of cheddar cheese!
Yes you are ok to take cheese in your case to Majorca
hmm ok, well im still not taking it at the risk of it stinking!
It should be okay because it is so cold in the hold that it's like refrigeration. I took some bags of fun sized chocs for my friend in the south of france and she said they were really cold when I gave them to her - that's an hour or two after arriving and unpacking.
English cheese so I always buy some to bring back, I wrap it in a couple of layers of foil and it's always been OK. The only thing that worries me is if the case goes missing. I often travel with only hand luggage so then again I pack it in foil and put a small ice pack in the bag next to it.
the "cold chain" lasts from the moment that the product is moved from producer to storage, and then from storage to supermarket, until the customer places the product in their fridge.
To keep the "cold chain" running, you must not leave a product (eg. cheese) in an area above 5 degrees for longer than 30 mins, else harmful bacteria will multiply.
Even if a plane hold is freezing, I would suggest that the bags would take longer than thirty mins to move from check in to airplane, and then from airplane to collection at the other end, in the heat of palma airport! If you then add on transport time of to and from the airport, I'd say it's a big no-no to transport unrefridgerated cheese.
Hope this gives you a good excuse not to take the smelly cheese!

It will make your boyfriend's father happy, which gets your holiday off to the best possible start for you all. Enjoy!!
If you buy your cheese in a good supermarket, they will be able to seal the cheese hermetically so there will be NO smell whatever and it will travel well.
its not you thats going to eat it, and you will be doing a favour for someone else. i can't see the problem. as boyfriends dad lives there, he will probably be annoyed at you refusing to do this and this will make for very lousy holiday.
chill out -take the cheese -and don't even think about taking any money for it. you will then be able to have a good time.
Why doesn't your boyfriend take the cheese in his case? Problem solved!
I don't think having your cheese above 5 degrees for a couple of hours will hurt it. In fact it will probably make it taste better. I wonder how they managed to take cheese on world voyages before the days of refidgeration and hermitical sealing?
Put yourself in his position and if you were living abroad and missing your favourite food.
This tread reminds me of when I worked in Libya,as pork(bacon is not allowed Muslim country) we used to put it in our case untill 1 case went missing for a week, never again!!!!.
We always go self catering and although lunch and evening meals are eaten out at various restaurants we always take a cool bag with us full of sausages, bacon, cheese etc for our breakfast. and just buy butter eggs milk etc when there. We just put ice packs between everything and it is fine.
Cheese and all dairy products are disallowed to flights within the EU.
We have been taking a cool bag full of food for over 23 years to Tenerife and we have never had any problems. As all bags are x-rayed I am sure they are aware what is in it, plus I don't usually pack clothes into a cool bag for my holidays The only time we couldn't take any was during the foot and mouth outbreak for obvious reasons.
My mother in law always brings cheese (along with other treats) from Holland for my partner and has never had problems.
My mother in law also brings at least one variety of English cheese when she visits us here in Spain (must be a mother-in-law thing!) as well as tins of cooked meat and other packets of treats for us and she has never had a problem. On her return to UK she takes packs of bacon which are vacuum sealed and again she has never had a problem. She also has friends who have a place on Menorca and they take a large bag full of allsorts of things including cakes, bread etc. I agree with jimd-f buy it in a vacuum sealed pack, it should be ok or, as SandC says let your boyfriend put it in his case.
She always goes self catering and takes with her in her case frozen bacon, chops, steak and cheese. She says they are still frozen when she gets to where she is going. Only had one problem a few years ago. When she got to her apartment she found the freezer too small to fit everything in and had to throw most of it away!!!
