I'm sure everyone out there is very sensible and wouldnt dream of going on holiday without adequate holiday insurance and their EHIC card? Please please PLEASE - if you're thinking of chancing a trip abroad without insurance, even if you're only going for a few days - think again!
Last Thursday my husbands best friend (who's 40 and in apparent good health) collapsed as he was boarding the coach in Alcudia for the return trip to the UK with his family.
He turned blue, having swallowed his tongue (prompt action from another passenger sorted that out) and then he suffered a massive seizure. The ambulance staff wouldn't even put him in the ambulance and transport him to hospital until they'd seen his insurance documents. Thank goodness his wife had all the documents with their passports so they were close at hand! Had he not been insured goodness knows what might have happened to him! Now that he's stable enough to be flown home he's having to wait for a doctor to escort him back with full medical back up.
I wouldnt even want to make a guess at how much a week in intensive care followed by escorted journey home might have cost him if he'd had to bear the brunt himself. (probably enough to give him a heart attack!

My husband and I flew out to Majorca last Saturday to collect their 2 children and bring them back to the UK. Did I get insurance for the 2 day trip? You can bet your life I did!
Like lots of people, we've been a bit complacent about applying for our European Health Insurance Card and I've certainly never carried my insurance documents around with me when I've been on holiday. Our friend has been told that had he had the EHIC on his person he'd have been taken right to hospital. Needless to say, I shall be carrying mine around with me in future when I go away.
