There are plenty of places to hire cars in Cala D'or. I was there last year and hired a car for myself, wife a 2 kids. I found driving around the island to be easy enough. We never tried the buses.
There are 2 "tourist trains" which operate around the Cala D'Or area which we used quite a few times to get from one area to another. We don't mind walking, but at sometimes it's just too hot 8)

Possibly too hilly depending on where you are in Cala Dor and certainly too hot in August to walk far or hang around waiting for buses.

If you are up for it then a hire car will be 100% better, make sure it has air conditioning, though I think they all do now.

There are plenty of buses in Cala D'Or from Cala Serena to Playa Mondrago, also three noddy trains. Intercity buses to Palma and resorts to the north. Boat services up and down the coast as well. Drop in the tourist office on the road from the centre to the Marina, they have the timetables and a good map showing the locations of appartments and hotels.
