It's 3 hours on the bus to Chania then about another 45 minutes from Chania to Maleme. Personally, I enjoy bus travel on Crete and don't worry about a 3 hour journey, but it's not everyone's cup of tea!

Thanks Elenitsa I think I might have to give it a miss. Most of the flights get in to Crete around 3am and I don't think I could face another 3 plus hours

Try going independently! We landed 1 am this June, I'd phoned a hotel from Bristol airport as soon as we knew the flight was on time. We were in bed by 2am in a hotel in Heraklion and on the 8.30am bus the next morning. 2.5 hours to Vrisses, an hours wait for the bus to Hora Sfakion and we were drinking a beer in Loutro by 1.30pm!

Crete is SO easy to get around independently.
