Thanks for all the tips, everybody.
The boat trip to Skala Skiminias sounds a must-do.
We do tend to give any big, showy restaurants with mile-long cocktail menus a wide berth, and we do like to go into the back streets to look for tucked-away places.
After all these reports, I can't wait to go.
Cheers
Polly
Your welcome Polly.
We fly out 5 weeks as yesterday, or more optimistically 4 weeks next Thursday.
Hope you have a great time in Rhodes. Have you found another gem of a resort on that island too?

One thing to be aware of if staying in or around Petra....the tour buses are too big to get down the little roads and they only use small buses. Your luggage is loaded onto the rear of small trucks with trailers and it can be quite unnerving following the trailer looking at your suitcase on the top of the pile waiting to fall off You will then be dropped off as close to your accomodation as possible but this may still involve a long walk on what are basically nothing moe than dirt tracks.
On your return, if you have a morning flight you will need to pack the night before and to leave your suitcase at the top of the road unattended where it will be collected by the little trailer again BEFORE your transfer coach arrives. You then have to hunt down your suitcase outside the airport when you fiannly arrive yourself.
But please DON'T let this put you off......Levos is a BEAUTIFUL island and the luggage siutation is typically Greek really.

green island and very beautiful and not spoilt! I stayed at Petra which is quiet and relaxing with everthing close to where I was staying. Blue sky apartments were very nice and family run which felt very personel! I would definatly go back to Petra the tavernas are very greek and serve great food especially the womens coopertive. the only downside is probaly the transfer it was 1hr 45 min which can be a bit long after the flight. Molvos harbour was very pretty worth a visit in the evening just to watch the sun go down! I hope this helps any of you planning a trip to Lesbos. Linny
There are one or two drawbacks which have been mentioned elsewhere, but there is movement to improve - the airport has made gigantic steps this year to lose the 'world's worst airport' tag - it has installed a computer system which has substantially reduced the queues - and there are major roadworks going on which will reduce the time (ultimately) to Kalloni and all points west and north by about half an hour. (Lookyou, when I started going it took 1 1/2 hours to Kalloni alone! Now that's down o 45 minute and it will get shorter.) The only worry is that this will attract the yobbish tendency who want to fall out of the plane into a bar. Let's hope not.
We're going back again in September to Petra - we avoid the likes of the Panorama (too far from the village centre) and the Blue Sky (too noisy) and stay in rooms booked independently. We've never had a problem - try the Petra Beach rooms at the back of the Care Reef (INVALID URL Only £70 per week per head, b&b.
What makes it different? If I had to pick just one thing, it would be the people. So, so friendly - and genuinely so.
See you there?
No McDonald's or KFC, and nowhere advertising 'Roast Beef Sunday Dinner' or 'Bangers and Mash' - absolute heaven.
It seemed very uncommercialised with quite a few Greek holidaymakers there, too.
Most of the tavernas seemed to be family affairs serving traditional Greek food and playing Greek music.
We stayed at the Panorama Hotel - although it's a bit of a walk into Petra itself (15 or 20 minutes from our high-up room), we felt it was worth it for the fantastic views over Petra and the sea (check out my hotel review).
I would say the only downside was the beach and sea.
The sand is very dark and this clouded the sea as the waves churned it up on the shore.
We'd definitely choose to go back and I agree with Reefuser that it would be a shame if it got spoiled.

We are going to Lesbos for the first time 8 weeks today!!!! We are staying at the Panorama Hotel in Petra.
I would be very grateful for any advice regarding the following:
1/ What does the breakfast consist of? and at what time(s)? We have booked B&B at the Panorama.
2/ Can you book a taxi transfer at the airport or is it best to book through the tour operator?
3/ Finally, does anyone recommend a hire car firm so that we can arrange it before we go?
Any information would be most helpful.
Thanks
For info on the Panorama Hotel, check out my hotel review.
I think that breakfast was served from 7:30 to 9:30 but it may have started slightly earlier than that.
If you wanted a cooked breakfast, they did eggs, bacon, omelettes etc at extra charge.
I'm sure you'll have a great time, Lesvos is a lovely island - we'll definitely be going back.
