Just got back from a two week holiday in north cyprus. My family and I stayed in the Altinkaya Holiday Village, kyrenia. We had a lovely holiday, everything was spot on, apart from the hotel! We were under the impression this hotel was rated at 4* by Jewels of the world, but after staying there, it is no more than a 2*. There is no way Altinkaya is a 4* hotel. It looks lovely and sophisticated as you walk up to the entrance and into the tasteful decor of the reception area, however, the standard of service, the cleanliness (which to us is very important), and the food (even more important) was very disappointing. We booked on a B&B basis but the breakfasts made us realise (and the two meals we experienced) that the food was dreadful and luckily we wasn't half-board. Their fish made my sister ill for a week, (we told the manager) and their use of margarine (which strangely tasted like the kind they provided to put on our toast in the mornings) to fry their vegetables and add to their rice (!!) left a bitter taste in our mouths. I'm sad to say some of their staff (apart from a lovely waitress called melissa and a couple of others) were so uneager to please they were almost arrogant. This is horrible for me to say because everywhere else on th island the people are lovely and very warm. Anyway, I could go on for longer about the terrible standard of food, but there are other topics! The cleanliness was very poor. When my dad asked one of the cleaners why she doesn't change the sheets like most hotels, she replied to my dad, who was born in kyrenia in the 50's, we were "clean people so she didn't think she should." Instead we had to put up with sheets that looked 50 years old, complete with stains, holes and a feeling that our experience in a 4* hotel was far from the luxury that we had looked forward to. For the next week and a half our floors were building up with dust (they were hardly cleaned), our sheets were never changed, the air conditioning remote control arrived in the second week in my room and it was 36 degrees outside, the handwash dispenser was only filled after we complained (I must stress that we don't like complaining, especially as my parents hadn't had a holiday abroad for 13 years), and the towels looked and smelt ten years old. My dad did explain this to the owner, politely saying that these little things need to be changed as us english expect these little details to be right. Oh, and we also put to their attention that the cans of Ice Coffee in the mini bar were two years out of date. So if you do decide to stay here check before you eat/drink. North cyprus is beautiful and we will return, but unfortunately, not to Altinkaya. If you are thinking of staying here be aware that this is not a 4* hotel and Jewels of the world need to re-think the hotel's rating. Hopefully the management at Altinkaya will listen to our feedback (and a few other guests we spoke to who were also disappointed), for their reputation sake.
