Yes, there's a jeep safari available and you can usually book this direct with the firm that does them - they've usually got a jeep parked in the main street - Rua 25 Abril - in the evenings taking bookings. There's usually an opportunity to go for a swim on the way back so take a change of clothes with you.
The day tour to the Monchique mountains is good;on a clear day you can see the whole length of the Algarve from the summit.Another good one is the Western Algarve trip which takes you along the coast, through several small, unspoilt villages as far as Cap St Vincent, the most westerly point of Europe;the scenery there is really rugged and breathtaking !!
Full day trips,or 2/3 day trips to Lisbon can be arranged, as can day trips to Seville.
If you fancy swimming with dolphins you can do this at Zoomarine near Albufeira, but it's not cheap and you'll need to book this early on in your holiday as demand is usually high.
Not far from your apartments is the Marina where you can book all kinds of water-based activities, from diving, big game fishing and dolphin safaris to full, half or evening cruises along the coast with an onboard barbecue.
You're also fairly close to the railway station so you can explore other resorts independently as rail travel is really cheap compared with the U.K., but be careful as the rail line runs inland of many resorts even though the stations bear the name of the resort, so a bus or taxi transfer can be needed to reach the resort. The resorts which have railway stations in or near to the towns are:-Portimao(a shoe shopper's paradise),Silves(a 10 minute walk)Almancil,Faro,Olhao,Tavira and Vila Real de San Antonio. The rail service closes down for the night much earlier than at home, so check your last train time carefully before you set out.
Don't know whether they still do it, but when we first visited Lagos, many, many years ago, we went on a "rustic evening"which took you to a farm out in the country where they had traditional dancing and singing and locally made wine and liqueurs.
There's also horse riding available both for experienced riders and learners.
Don't know if I've mentioned this previously, but make sure you take a trip to the grottos in one of the small boats(the small ones can get you into more of the grottos)and make sure you go at low tide(you can check this by the waterline on the river wall)I know they've got grottos in nearly every European coastal resort but these are really worth seeing.
One last thing - if any of you are feeling really adventurous you can go up in a microlite 'plane from the local Lagos airport just on the edge of town.
There's probably other trips you can take and if I think of anything I'll let you know.Just shout if there's anything else you need to know.
Once again thanks for all your help
Presumably you get the trips to the grottos near the marina is that right?
Yeah, along the esplanade you will find them as well.try the 'Bom Dia',it's quite a large boat for those without sea legs.
Bom Dia is too large to do the grotto trips. It has to be one of the small boats for you to get inside the caves. There is a stainless steel pontoon moored on the town side of the river, not far from the Portuguese Telecom building; you can get a tour from there, or next to the fort at the western end of the Avenida. The small boats also leave from Dona Ana beach and from Ponta da Piedade.
