They can a bit pushy, the young boys who sell jasmine. I used to feel sorry for them, and buy 1 every evening just because i loved the smell. But 1 evening we were at the fountains sitting down. And a boy started pestering us to buy jasmine we said "no thank you". He left it on my lap (oldest trick in book) and i just lifted it and put it one side away from me. He picked it up and muttered someting like "b*tch" and went off. We felt a bit annoyed by that but it didn t ruin our holiday.
never take anything as a free gift as there is no such thing anywhere. Though I saw several people falling for it!!!

LOL- it is amazing how good their English is in those situation ;)
None of the "incidents" I mentioned above ruined my holiday, just wanted to make people aware of those things.

Especially if you have DT in your hand for the first time, it is easy to fall for one of those "you did not give me enough" ;)

Hi,

One trick I've got fairly used to happens almost as soon as you leave the airport to get your transfer bus. At Tunis airport there's always someone selling little bunches of flowers - a lot like the jasmine, in resort - except of course they don't tell you they're trying to sell it

The patter goes something like this: '(Name of your tour operator) welcomes you to Tunisia' while holding out the flower. Then, of course, once you take it, expecting it to be free, they demand money.

I now say no thanks, straight away, in Arabic - laa ayshk or laa shokran (ayshk is the less formal version). They disappear straight away?

hey Anna+Sunstroke

Yes it is amazing how their english can be suddenly so good  .
Anna,This is a really good idea to create a topic to let people know about the things to expect!! No one likes been taken for a ride so its a good thing to be aware!!

Another great trick I heard of, is when you get out of a taxi, someone may come up to you and say " i am the waiter from your hotel let me show you around" and if you ask them what hotel it is, they ll get it right!!! You know why? The taxi man will have told him where he picked the passengers up from!!! Quite clever actually!!! Though our rep did warn us about this so we didn t fall for it!! We were never tricked with the money in Tunisia, thank god.

Though have to say Tunisia is a walk in the park hasslewise especially when compared to Cairo (I gave one man the expected 2€ tip for camel ride and he wouldn t let me get off until I gave him 5€) :o !!! We thought that was quite ungrateful, but again didn t put us off Egypt theres just some people who do bad things like that everywhere!!! But we found most Tunisians seemed happy with any type of tip, we never had any problems!!!

I just wanted to emphasize that people shouldn t be upset by this!!
Just be prepared for tourist traps that exist everywhere!!! And most importantly don t let it ruin your holiday!!!

O yesssssssssssssssssss- works every time. First reaction to your answer is :yikes , then suddenly it turns out he does not work in your hotel after all, you misunderstood the name of the hotel, he confused you with someone else etc etc and he dissapears.

Seen this tip on this forum before and had a chance to test it a few occassions - good to be prepared
