Your hotel reps will probably recommend Visanta, but they're not much cheaper than anything you can buy on t'internet over here. I have just discovered my lovely old camcorder has 'died' and we're on holiday in 12 days I was looking at the new JVC Everio HDD models, the lowest-spec model is £499 in most retailers, I found it in our local Jessops store yesterday for £399, and I was very tempted, but I got home, went on Amazon and found it for £325 brand new (despatched from France, but still the same model and everything)
As a rule I would stay away from the electrical shops on the Canary Islands (especially if they're called 'Argos' or 'Dixons' ... not to be trusted at all) But if you get a good recommendation from someone then it's always worth a look.
I was feeling rather worried about taking the risk after reading these threads so I went to Argos yesterday and bought them what they wanted it means i can have peace on the plane on the way over
This was an electrical store which also sold cigarettes (probably all do) I can describe as from port turn left on coast road and only few hundred yards away. The shop is run by Indians and seemd to specialise in cameras videos and similar.
Briefly, I purchased an IPOD type machine and was told receipt/guarentee was in box. This was last purchase on way back to ship and yes you've guessed - no receipt or guarentee and machine is pretty useless. (also I was given price in cash of £50 but when I converted what I paid in euros it was over £75) Guess I've been taken for a ride but if anyone can identify shop and get me contact details - name address and email I will see if I can get any response. I'm not usually gullible - must be the holiday mode. If you know this store(I can Identify from photo if possible) info would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Wendy
too late now for wendy but i would advise anyone else reading this just not to bother buying electrical goods here.
If this problem is as widespead as it seems I would like to see the authorities get a grip on it!!!!
Merged with similar topic.
Again, I know it doesn't help you wendy, but things maybe are looking up lately, as shopkeepers are getting tired with all being tarred with the same brush, and are trying to set up an association to stop the ripoffs that have been happening.
Sorry to hear of your rip off. I have just paid for a digital camera, on e-bay, to take to Lanzarote guess what, cheque got cahed and no delivery of camera so it's not just abroad you've got to take care it's here as well.
hi, we have bought many electrical goods from PDC over the years a lot cheaper than back home, there is only one place we go to in PDC its called "Visanta" 100% genuine
Well there's no bargains to be had in the electrical shops I tried in Costa Teguise a few days ago. I had forgotten to pack the lead to my digital camera and went looking for one..... First Electrical shop wanted 20 Euro - quickly dropped to 15. Second shop started at 15 and went to 10. Eventually got one in a camera shop in Arrecife for 3.20 euro. That may be an indication of the 'mark-up' in shops in areas frequented by tourists.
DO NOT buy anything in those shops wait until go home YOU will GET stung :bow:argue
