Far East

Hi,
The tanjung aru is a really lovely hotel to stay at.We have been there twice now, we have travelled all over the far east, and it is one of the best we have ever visited.
It has been full both times that we have been there, but you would never know.
The grounds are very spacious, and there are always spare chairs.Alot of people tend to go out to the islands, just 5 mins away on the resorts boats.
The town is about 10 mins in a taxi, cost about £3 each way,or you can get the hotel shuttle bus.
Lots of places to eat in the town, and some great shopping malls.[very cheap shoes].
There are some very good trips to go on,and lots of wildlife to see.
Have fun

I have heard that there is a reef there - is that true and what is the snorkling and diving like.

Thanks again

hi Trish. Have you read our reviews of the hotel here? It looks like a great choice.

trish1968,

The reefs are to be found on the outlying islands of the Maritime park. The boat staff at the hotel will drop you off at the best one depending on weather conditions which they keep a close eye on as the weather which can change from pleasant to rainy quite quickly. Palau Manakan one of the nearest (5 mins by speedboat) has reef about 20 yards off from the beach which is fine for snorkelling.

Me again with some more questions if that is OK. Do you have to book the restaurants in the hotel and if so does that have to be in advance. Just wondered how busy they got. Also as there are so many guests does the breakfast area get very busy or is that quite large and finally, I understand from the reviews that it is a buffet, do you get a full english as you can't get pork sausages so presumabley you cant get bacon.

Thanks again

We were there on B&B basis...did not use the Breakfast lounge as they provide it as room service at no extra charge. Breakfast was so big we used to save some of it for our picnic lunch on the islands.

Its beef bacon or turkey ham they use a s substitutes, chicken or turkey sausages.

We used to just turn up at the restaurants...to be honest found the food a bit disappointing and used to eat out in KK a lot instead.

Was the breakfast in your room because you booked a special room or package or does that apply to everyone.

The restaurants were not very busy then. If we go ahead an book would you beable to reccomend some good resturants in town?

Many thanks

I wouldn't try snorkelling from the beach near the hotel as it's not very clean and a bit too close to the water village. The islands are fine for snorkelling though.
I didn't find breakfast too busy as people drift in at different times. There's a large dining room and it is split into 2 sections - 1 with air-con and 1 without and also an outside area so plenty of room and staff clear away quickly. There's an excellent choice (including cakes) but chicken sausages and beef bacon are ugh!!

Thanks for the replies. Can I ask one further thing, did you take malaria tablets or have any vaccinations?

Thanks again

We were on malarials but that was because we had come from the jungles of peninsula Malaysia. The NHS link below suggest you should be.

No, I stopped taking malaria tablets about 12 years ago. Partly because I don't like taking pills but they also gave me slight aches and pains. I use plenty of repellant that contains Deet. I also buy the local repellant which seems to work well and take it out with me in the evenings just for a top up. I also buy a room spray just to catch the odd mozzie lurking in the bathroom.
Dengue can be prevalent in some parts so I use a sunscreen with insect repellant.
But get medical advice from your GP and then it's your choice.

Thaks everyone for the information. I will speak to my GP and then make a decision. I wouldn't usually worry about bites as not been affected until this year when I was bitten to death for some reason. :(

Thanks

Just been looking at some pictures of this hotel and there is one of the bathroom and there is a huge window overlooking the sea in the shower. Do you know which rooms this is in it looked great

Hi Trish,
I can only think that this must be one of the horizon club rooms,as we have stayed in both the other type of rooms, and neither had a window in the bath/shower room,

Obviously not the one I stayed in...bathrooms were ordinary when we visited but they may well have had a refurb since then.

Thanks Sunbear & Suzi

I suppose I will just have to wait until I get there.

Just read a disturbing report on another forum regarding the rubbish in the sea here and the "smell" It is true? I think we have accepted that the beach is not great to swim on but would like to wander along the beach without holding our noses. Can anyone advise further.

Thanks

The Tanjung Aru has a small manmade beach (take you about a minute to walk the length of it), used mainly for sunbathing. You do find the nearby village throws out some litter which floats in the sea so you probably would not be taken with swimming at the hotels beaches. The nearby beach of Tanjung Aru, is not that spectacular. The hotel has aboardwalk and jetty which makes for a pleasant evening walk.

Its the nearby coral islands that have the decent beaches, for swimming and snorkelling.
