I previously requested info from other members on getting to Datca from Turunc. Have just returned from our fantastic holiday in beautiful Turunc, and using advice from HT members we had an enjoyable 2 days in Datca. Thought others may be interested to hear how we got on, if you are staying in the Marmaris,Icmeler or Turunc area its quite an easy thing to do.
Well, we set off with our rucksacks at 6:50 am from our apartment in Turunc to get the 7am dolmus to Marmaris, if I remember rightly I think its 4 lira each. Got to Tansas about 7:45 went round the side to look for the ticket office, but it appeared to be shut. Asked a dolmus driver for Datca, and he told us to hop on! He took us to the bus terminal at the top of Marmaris (free). Then pointed us in the direction of the Datca bus. This was a more comfortable mini bus with air conditioning, it left on the dot at 8 am (they run hourly), and cost 7 lira.
After a spectacular journey on the new road, along the peninsula - at one point you can see both the Aegean and the Med - we arrived in Datca at about 09:15 am.
Our first impressions were of a busy typically Turkish town, with all the honey shops, nut shops etc., and no sign of any 'sanitising for English tourists'. We kept walking and came to the harbour, where there was a mixture of boats for trips, ferry boats(to the Greek Island of Simi, among other places), and expensive gulets and yachts from many other countries. We then walked along the town beach, and found a lovely spot in front of a restaurant where sun beds were free if you bought food and drink from the restaurant. The beach was sandy, the sea very clean and stayed shallow for a long way out. We spent a while there, then I went to look for somewhere to stay,
I got a map from Tourist Info and they wrote on it the location of a few hotels. Tried a couple around the harbour but they were full, then walked further up the beach out of town, and tried the Uslu which had been recommended by an HT member. Fortunately they had an apartment which we paid 140 lira for including breakfast. We may well have found somewhere cheaper had we tried, but the Uslu was in a nice position, the apartment was basic but quite spacious and clean, so rather than waste time we booked in.
Had a typical Turkish lunch in the restaurant by the sunbeds on the beach, after a wander round, an hour by the pool at the apartments, we got ready and walked back down to the harbour area. The whole place came alive at night, plenty of people wandering around, lots of busy bars and restaurants, and not an English voice to be heard! Sat and had a cocktail while doing a bit of people watching, then had dinner in a restaurant overlooking the harbour called Kucuk Ev, where we chose fish from the cabinet, had another wander round and a couple of drinks then headed back to bed.
The following morning enjoyed our Turkish Breakfast in the bar overlooking the sea, then wandered back down to the beach. Watched the local fisherman selling their catch at the top of beach, and carrying out the typical 'mending of the nets' as is mentioned in all good holiday brochures! After a swim to cool off, headed back to the Uslu to pack up and check out then got the midday dolmus back to Marmaris. (Had to buy a ticket first in the ticket office in the main street)
We really enjoyed our little trip, and would recommend it to other holidaymakers in the Marmaris area, if you want to see a more traditional side of Turkey. The choice of food was good and cheap, but if you like fish and chips and roast beef don't go there!
We have always found that Turkey is a brilliant place for getting around, their public transport system is very efficient and cheap, and from Marmaris you can get to lots of different places.
Hope that is of interest to some people, and look forward to hearing of other peoples travelling experiences, and thank you to the members who advised us on this.
nice report alfie............... i too ate in the kucuk ev....... nice views........ its a pity you didnt get to knidos and the nice places at the end of the peninsula........maybe next time............ hey, as you are just over the hill......... maybe you can drop in for a beer or two
That's great reading mate, thanks very much, sounds like my type of area
We are gradually getting round seeing the sites around the area. One of our ideas is to maybe spend a night or two at Clubrena some time. We just seem to find once we get to Turunc and relax, we find we slow right down and have to force ourselves to make the effort to do some of the things we planned! Still theres plenty of time in the future. So maybe we'll take you up on that offer!
