You could try Alsace (a bit close to your time limit ... 8 hours from Calais) and the weather could be cool, but it's so beautiful and with so much to do, that you wouldn't get bored .... oh but no beaches.

hi we went to the VENDEE this year from 25th may until 9th june and had FANTASTIC weather. we actually stayed just outside St Jean De Monts but there are lots of beautiful places around that area. St Gilles Cru de Ville was particularly lovely. We travelled down from Caen (we took the fast ferry from Portsmouth) and it took us approx 4 hours including stops. Make sure you pay a visit to Le Grand Parc Puy du Fou because its BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!
