There have been changes - a lot more guests are from Eastern Europe and are staying on an all-inclusive basis.
The hotel is spotlessly clean (I would suggest you ask for accommodation in the main building rather than the annexes so you are closer to the action!), and the hot water is copious at all times of day.
The food is good, but can be a bit repetitive if you are staying more than a week. Leftovers are used creatively, but do appear regularly (sprout salad anyone?). There are local products used at all meals, and there is a wide variety of choice and hot food remains hot. The waiters/waitresses are genuinely friendly and do their jobs well.
The owner of the hotel - a former University professor - is present in the hotel and keeps a close eye on things (he and his family and his spaniels live on the premises).
Staff are friendly and efficient - the receptionists are particularly welcoming, and there is a mini-market on the premises, and several close to the hotel. The car park is adequate.
There are lots of daytime activities, and a safe play park for small children. There is a bowling alley (supplement) and a small covered pool as well as a large open pool with children's section. There is enough space for everyone - though there are inconsiderate guests who sit on the cushioned chairs with wet swimming costumes .............
There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the vicinity (including a good English cafe/bar if you feel the need for Hollands Pies, and 'real' bacon and sausages, owned by a very friendly couple.
Many tour operators run excursions from the hotel; and if you decide to take one from say, a Germany company, they will probably be able to put you on a tour which is bi-lingual or multi-lingual so you can understand the commentary too.
Buses to Heraklion and Agios Nikolaus can be got from the main road (about half a mile away) but although they run regularly, they can be full before they get to your stop. Car hire is easy to arrange.
If you are travelling independently, you may find the hotel rather expensive - it is noted as local 4*, but Neckermann offer this hotel at good price - you can even book over the web.
I do not give praise lightly - I'm really cynical and critical, but I have really enjoyed my stays here and would be happy to come back. I have always hired a car during my stay for flexibility, but enjoy 'coming home' each night. Incidentally the reception staff helped me to book at 2 days stay in Chania during my fortnight (I kept my room .. no reductions etc) when it was extremely busy ... and got me a very good price for the Best Western overlooking the Old Harbour with a sea view!!), which was way beyond their job description!
If you can afford this hotel, do go. It's a hidden gem.
