Has anyone stayed at the Maritim on the north-west coast of Mauritius? It looks very nice! We've been to the Caribbean each March for the last 5 years and fancy a change so we decided to look east rather than west. We've considered the Maldives, which would be my choice, but there won't be enough for the others in our party to do. I love diving and snorkelling while the others like to get out and explore so we thought Mauritius would be more suitable. I've had a quote for next March, staying for 2 weeks which was quite resonable. Flying from Manchester to Paris, then onward to Mauritius with Air France.
If anyone has any comments on this hotel, it would be much appreciated. It looks very nice and the snorkelling from the photo in the brochure fantastic!
Thanks,
Darren
Have you seen our reviews of the
Thanks Fiona! I did have a look at the hotel reviews section, but I never thought of looking at the the Indian section!
Have been there twice. Great hotel but Snorkelling not great! You will really need a car to get out and about. There are Taxis outside the hotel But it is best to drive around yourself. With 4 of you it will work out reasonable for 3/4 days. You can drive round the whole country in a day and see it all if you take it slowly.
Reccomend:
Mon Chouisy Beach
Bain Bouf Beach
Blue Bay
Ile Plate (Day Trip)
Port Louis Market (Any Day)
Gran Bassin
Goodlands (For a real experience)
National Gardens (Pamplemousses)
Cap Maleareux
Enjoy......A great country

Thanks Matthew, thats a great help. I'd be diving more than snorkelling so will have to have a think about that.
I found the water in Mauritius to be a little cold for me and I wore a full length wet suit with a shortie over the top and was still cold. Next time I would take my semi dry with me. The water in the Maldives is like a bath and I dont even usually bother even with my shortie.
However, Mauritius is a wonderful destination and certainly plenty to see and do there.
I would, however, recommend the taxis for getting round the island. We have both hired cars and used the taxis and we find the taxis to be the cheaper option and they will take you exactly where you want to go so no worries about getting lost or taking a wrong turn.
Your nearest dive school is at Belle Mare Plage. Some 3/4 miles away. The nearest decent dive Aquarium is Merville just off of Grand Baie. It is about 12M deep.
You also have 'Colorado' Just off Blue Bay which averages at 30m deep and 'Rembrant L'Herbe' off of Flic an Flac at 45m.
Try and get the Lonely Planet guide to Mauritius if you can. It really is helpful with all the phone numbers and web addresses you will need.
Remember....Everyone speaks English and they drive on the left!

Thanks guys, some really useful stuff their. I've got a copy of a guide to diving in that area. I'm used to Caribbean and european diving so it'll make to change to see what the Indian Ocean has to offer. A close encounter with a shark or two will do nicely! It looks quite appealing. The water temperatures aren't a problem, I work in fisheries and spend my winters in water down to freezing point in a dry suit so anything warmer than that is like getting in to a bath!
GMTV wedding taking place there this week. The wedding itself will be on Friday but the couple are over there now and they were showing clips around the hotel this morning. I know they usually do this item at about 7.25am and also later on in the morning but I am not sure what times.
Thanks again for all your help. I might just be booking it when I get back from Turkey!
