We are off to Lapland for a week in December (can't wait)!!!
Should we hire the thermal suits that are advertised in the Inghams brochure, or do we just take regular ski clothes and lots of layers?
Also what do we wear on our feet for warmth and comfort.
We have never been on a winter holiday and not sure how i will brace the cold, but this is a once in a lifetime trip for us but i want to get it right.
Any ideas or help................please
Thanks x

Hi there - you sound just like us!

We went on our first winter holiday last February and posted the same questions! This year we're off to Lapland for the first time!

We have been advised to stick to the normal ski gear - last year when we shopped for Austria we had Lapland in mind! We have loads of layers - thermal underwear, polo neck tops, thin base layers and fleeces, plus a ski jacket and padded thermal salopettes (spelling?) We also purchased some good snow boots that would cope with minus 30 degrees and have thick socks. Last year though I found that my feet were wet with sweat so have been to Millets and got some thin wicking socks (is that the right term?) to stop my feet sweating and keep them dry.

From all the people we have spoken to the more layers the better and the people in Lapland we asked via e-mail said that normal ski wear would be ok! Just remember that you need moisturiser that is NOT water based! It freezes! We have also checked that Yllas (where we are staying) has a place where we can hire gear is if need be - we are thinking that if we are desperate then we can hire gear when we are there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great time --- we are soooooooooooooooooo excited about Yllas in February!

Hi Presto,
Thanks for your reply. Am gradually getting ski stuff for kids, and we are borrowing our adult clothes from friends!!
We too are off to Yllas, staying at the Log Cabins and half boarding at the Akas Hotel. We are soooooooo excited, only 3 months to go.
Will we all need a moisturiser do you think? Any recommended brands and how do i know what is water based (sorry probably a dumb question)
We are going to take a big holdall and fill with snacks and nibbles because some friends say that it is so cold you don't feel like popping to the supermarket!!
Am excited but also apprehensive as we have never done a winter holiday and do worry how we will cope with the cold weather.

Hi there,

SNAP!

Re the moisturisers - good question! Its one I was going to ask. I have a freind who does a lot of skiing so I will ask and let you know - but I'm sure that someone out there can help us!

We're wondering if we need snow goggles rather that the sunglasses we used last year. The glasses were superb for Austria, but when you breathe they fog-------- in Lapland I can imagine it is far worse and may freeze.

Any help from HT folk appreciated!

Re checking if its water based - we had ti get sun creams last year that weren't water based and they were from Trespass. We checked the label to see what it was made of - if we saw 'aqua' we thought that it wasn't ok! We have read somewhere that in Lapland you are better not to wash too much / cleanse before you go out so that you body's natural 'oils' can help ------------------ this may be rubbish but, again, is there anyone out there who can help

Any help appreciated by us folk Yllas bound!
