Well, arrived back this morning after a good flight to leeds/brad 3hours 50mins - so catching up on a few disccusion forums (too damn addictive this site - will need another holiday soon !!)
1st time to GC but have done Tenerife before and found GC much better.
Stayed in Amadores at the Mirador del Atalantico which was great, the resort was clean with a man made crecent shaped beach.Spent our days split between the beach and the hotel pool.On an evening had a couple of quiet nights in the beach side restaurants and back to the hotel for an evening show. Other nights were in the resort of Puerto Rico - what a difference !! everything you wanted at a choice of 2 centers,Europa or Commercial (the latter being the biggest and the best). Even a walk down to the Marina through the 2 well kept parks sprang up some nice restaurants and decent little bars which was very pleasent.
I couldn't stand the hassle of being asked to look at menus but you put up with it . All restaurants display very similar menus and serve decent enough food without breaking the bank.
A good choice of bars if you want the 'thump-thump' music or others with the usual 'Krapiokee' or quizes etc..
I have never seen as many Irish bars, some genuine some 'plastic'. The best we visited on 2 occasions for some live music, as the trio were excellent was in Molly Malones in the Commercial Center.
Had a look at the trips on offer and all similar to what we have done in the past - jeep safari/camels etc.. but as we were on a 'chill-out' holiday only visited Playa del Ingles for the day, which we thought the beach was of a dirty standard, went here by local bus which was a good trip to see whats around.
Went to Mogan twice on the ferry and local bus (read Mogan beach warning thread) which we thought was a very nice resort and more of what we like - side street restaurants with some good looking traditional local bars.
Temperature through out the 2 weeks went from 30c-35c then up to 35c-42c.
I would defo be going back to this Island as it has everything inc. the weather - Goa next March then hopefully back to GC in Sept/Oct.
Thanks for your report Spike and welcome back
Spike refers to were the "in the sun" temperatures as shown on a date/time/temp indicator by the pool. This indicator was taking the full force of the sun by the time the golden orb had risen above the hill at the back of the hotel complex. Had it been in the shade the temperature shown would have been more realistic I think. Of course, Spike was there a full week before I was so I can't pass my opinion on that week's cracked flags status.
For me, the sun was mostly comfortable but, for those of the "The hotter the better" persuasion (fools), they could be disappointed as it may be too cool. I personally don't consider a genuine average of 79°F to be too cool. The average temp could be even higher than that!
As Spike says though, the area itself is very pleasant indeed although there is some building work going on round about. This may cause certain individuals to complain but we hardly noticed it. By next year it should all be just about complete which should help keep the moaners quiet.
There is a rather smelly area on the corner of a hairpin bend as you walk from the Mirador del Atlantico hotel to the beach ; not very pleasant but you're soon past it. That's abroad for you.
There are also bugs of all shapes and sizes present that can alarm certain people but again, it's a hot place and that's what you should expect.
Flights? Absolutely splendid! Took off from my local airport (Leeds/Bradford) on time and landed half an hour early coming back, unlike a work colleague who flew from Doncaster and was delayed going out by a considerable amount of time but was even later getting back (6 hours!). I would've hated that.
I must persuade my other 'alf to consider going again next year.
Have a look at the website (INVALID URL There's a brilliant live webcam link on there that shows moving images. (May not work with Windows xP unfortunately, but if anyone does get the link to work in xP, please let me know how you did it.)
Right then, until the next time.
Just to clear up a few misconceptions about the temperature in this part of the world, mainly last week (1st - 8th October); the temperatures which my bro-in-law For me, the sun was mostly comfortable but, for those of the "The hotter the better" persuasion (fools), they could be disappointed as it may be too cool.
