We spent a day in Malcesine in Sept when we were staying at Bardolino. We thought it was a lovely place and enjoyed wandering the tiny streets and visiting the castle. The cable car to Monte Baldo is also worth doing. You'll be able to visit a lot of the other lake resorts by boat or bus and Verona is also about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs away.
