Sanji how lovely, tears here too.
Thank you everyone for making this thread so memorable, I was gobsmacked when I checked in this morning and found so many replies. Thank you!
Just hearing on the radio yesterday that discussions on a white poppy were onging...................apparently as a sign of peace.
I dont think anyone thinks that the red poppy glorifies war...........it symbolises the loss of life and limb to our past and present soldiers......................I for one hope that we never stop supporting the British Legion who do fantastic work for our ex servicemen and women (and families too)
love and best wishes to you all
I think the red poppy should remain. I must admit I've always believed it symbolised the blood-shed of WW1. Apparently not...

Pippy you have just beaten me posting here.
IMO: Poppies should always be red, they represent the blood that was spilt on our behalf and if I'm not mistaken, Red is the colour of blood.
The white dove is the international sign of peace.
We really must NOT let anybody try and change the colour of the poppy, that would be an insult to the people who died for us and diminish our respect for these souls.
Any Christian also knows, that Jesus Christ shed his blood....so what these PC Christian movements are on about..... is beyond me.
Interesting that red poppies are made by disabled people, but white poppies are made by a commercal operation.

Whilst poppies come in various colours, the red corn poppy grows as a weed in Europe ...including Flanders field.
Some things are worth fighting for, and it will be a sorry day if we let the PC brigade win this one.

Absolutely!
I've only just found this and have been very moved. My dad wasn't called up as he was a boiler-maker in the London docks, but so many brave men served and died, quite a lot of whom were only boys, and those who survived must have been haunted by their memories.
I too am sickened by the emergence of the white poppy. How anyone can imagine that the red poppy or anything connected with Remembrance Day glorifies war is beyond me. It is, and always has been, simply a time to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom and a reminder of the horrors of war.
Lally, I'd like to offer you and your family my deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. I hope that happy memories of him will help to comfort you in the days ahead.

Just logged on and discovered the lovely Christmas format. Thank you for putting me in festive mood, and Happy Christmas to you all.
I'm a lot too late, but having just discovered this,it brought back memories of my lovely, late Dad,who fought in the second world war, from aged just 22, with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (8th Battalion) for six long years,in France, North Africa,Italy...Montecassino etc.etc.etc. Mum (who's 80 now) has still got his 6 medals, in a cabinet in her lounge, displayed with pride, and I always wear my red poppy with extreme pride. He suffered with dyptheria during the war,was a POW at one point, managing to escape, and lost many of his close friends. Went to his grave with shrapnel still embedded in his head and leg.
He loved Christmas and New Year and was such good fun
I've got the utmost respect for all of those who battled long and hard for us, and what we have today.
Happy New Year to everyone.
