Depends what you want and what you like. Went to Sharm last year, enjoyed the snorkelling, but everything hotel based. A bus took you into Namma Bay in evening, personally we only went once because I hated it - you are hassled everywhere. Apart from going into Namma you cant really walk anywherein an evening, other than other AI hotels.

This year we discovered El Gouna - different kettle of fish altogehter - brilliant! Its a purpose built, private resort, set around lovely lagoons joined by bridges, and is totally hassle free! You can browse shops, walk past bars/restaurants with NO hassle, have choice of several beaches - perfect destination. This year we went b and b, which was brilliant, the hotel we were at had guests mostly from germany, iceland, holland, and only a very few british, but that suited us fine as we were out and about all the time. Next year we are booked for AI, but its costing us the same, and here we can get vouchers to eat out three or four days a week so we are not tied to the same buffet every night as is so common in AI's - so got the best of both worlds. Eating out is fantastic in El Gouna, its very quiet in July when we go, and everything is piping hot which meant this year none of us ended up with the usual tummy troubles! Cant wait to go back in July.

We did visit Hurghada whilst there, once, and were so glad we didnt book for there - it was a toss up between there and El Gouna for this year... pretty run down, full of perfume shops, hassle and so on.

El Gouna has a lot going on in the evenings - in the new Marina [short ride from resort - £1.50 in taxi [no hassle here either, everywhere you go is £1.50] or free through hotel shuttle bus, and they have a fab party night with brilliant 'acts'. This also happens down town El Gouna twice a week, plus a couple of nights a week they have a beach party at Mangroovy beach which suits all ages.

For me El Gouna wins hands down!
