Just returned from a 2 week holiday Booked through Globespan in Albufeira and our hotel (Tropical Sol ) was broken into 3 times in 1 week as guests slept in their beds.the hotel security is pretty poor and no security patrol at nights.Speaking to staff and guests the area is suffering from a crimewave of breakins muggings and drug dealing is increasing and tourism in the area is down 40%, we cant believe globespan is still using and continues to send people to this hotel until something is done about security. i.e (24 hr security guards with dogs) I would not advise going to this hotel . We spent the nights awake with the lights on and the furnishings up against the doors. The intruder was repeatedly getting access to the complex via a hole in the fence near the tennis court using a sun canopy and a tiled aircon soround outside our studio to aid his escape which the management failed to repair 8 days after the first robbery which 2 nice Irish ladies had their bag and passports stolen while they slept, they were awakened as most folk were sleeping and gave chase only for him to escape where he gained access. This hotel is also being used by My Travel, Airtours,Direct Holidays and First Choice.

I assume you told the Globspan rep about this as soon as you were aware of the situation? If they did nothing about it, you probably have some kind of case for a claim against them for ruining your holiday?
What did the police do about it?
I am afraid your information from other sources is only partly correct from my experience. Tourism is down, but that is for economic reasons, muggings are still relatively unknown, drug dealing is about the same as it's always been, but I agree, break in's are definitley up. To describe it as a crimewave, as you do in your hotel review, is rather OTT. The way to avoid break ins, is to take the same precautions you would at home - they are not going to batter down your door when the idiot next door has left theirs unlocked!
and shutters, if provided, when you go out; always use a safe if one is provided and never leave anything of value in your car. The only time we've been affected by a break-in was when our hire car was broken into while parked at a beach car park. Luckily there was nothing in it to steal!
In general, I think most people agree that Albufeira feels a very safe place, and I am sorry that you had such a dreadful time, John.
Yes, I agree with Algarveaddick. Holidaymakers are by definition more relaxed when they are away. Three things which should minimise the risk of losing possessions are to always lock up securely and close and lock windowsIn general, I think most people agree that Albufeira feels a very safe place, and I am sorry that you had such a dreadful time, John.
