Madaira is a gorgeous place depending on what you want. It is not in the same lifestyle as Albufeira or Tenerife. It is slower and I would say more "civilised". As far as May is concerned, it can be quite humid during that month continuing through June. There are indeed cafes and bars in Funchal after all it is a working town. The tiny restaurants can be found in the the "Old Quarter" just beside the bus station. An enjoyable evening stroll could take you along the sea front past the marina where there are also restaurants. There are also some English pubs, one I remember is "Prince Albert" (I think) which is beside the Pestana Carlton. Also you may wish to check the Pestana Group of hotels, (My daughter works there! :D :D) Madeira is within the EU so normal allowances apply.
