We are thinking about going to Matala in May and would welcome any comments and advice as to whether it would be the type of holiday we are looking for, ie fairly quiet. Have been to Crete many times over the last 20 years and resorts we have visited on the south coast are Makryalos, Paleochora, Myrtos and Plakias but will be the first time in this resort.
consider matala a bit more busy than Myrtos, and similar to Makrigialos.
its a small place with a few nice tavernas, the caves that everyone goes, and in general for me its a quiet place for holidays if its not july or august.

I would definately think it would be OK, I have stayed in Paleochora, Plakias and Matala all in a '3 week look at the west end of Crete' scenario.
Matala is on a par with either place, roughly the same size and same amount of development.
