Go on the old road and not the motorway. It will save you a hefty toll!

How much will the toll be than?

I think its about 15 euros.

Many years ago I did opposite journey by motorbike. Went to an old fishing village called Nazare it was great and not very touristy then, although may well be now I suppose. Probably worth a visit if not out of your way

Hello Koensk, some places to visit perhaps on the way up to Fatima if you take the A8 (1C1) out of Lisbon up to Obidos (old walled town) then on to Alcobaca ( biggest church in Portugal with the tombs of Pedro 1st and Ines de Castro, from here you could take a detour to Nazare as vivbaily said sea side town full of locals and fine reastaurants and then on to Batalha another fine church with the tombs of Joao 1st and his wife Philippa of Lancaster also here is the tomb of Henry the Navigator and Royal Cloisters and the unfinished chapels.
From here it is only a short drive to Fatima you could then go on to Tomar home of the Knights of Christ/Templar, from here you can then make your way down to the Algarve places to look out for on the way down Barragem Do Castelo De Bode,Castelo De Almourol, Alenquer, Torres Vedras, and then into upper Beiras and perhaps a stop at Coimbra and then into the Alentejo with the fortified town of Elvas and then to Vila Vicosa to see the Paco Ducal were all the Braganca kings of Portugal came from ( also from here was Catherine of Braganca wife of Charles the 2nd of England, look out for her tomb in the church Sao Vicente de Fora in Lisbon Tram 15 )
One town to stop at is Evora another walled town full history then down to Beja with its landmark castle.
Well you are now only a few miles from the Algarve time to put your feet up, or you could keep driving to see all the sites of this area
Hope this gives you a bit of help if you need to know any good sites let me now and I will do my best to sort some out for you.

Hi,

Dave made a pretty good description, but don't forget Lisbon.

You've got to visit Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, St George Castle, (and in your way up visit St Anthony Church and the Cathedral) Palacio da Ajuda, only to mention a few.

If you manage to have time go to Sintra and visit Palacio da Pena.

Try this site to choose your way http://www.mappy.co.uk

Have a fantastic holiday!

Hello olissipom, yes I did forget Lisbon what a fool I am.
Were do you start! Belem this is tram 15 not as I put in the above I should have put tram 28 for the best views of Lisbon, right Belem as you put the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is a must also at the other end of this building is the (Maritime Museum very good) the Torre de Belem from 1515 this is a Manueline gem and well worth a visit, the Monument to the Discoveries headed by Henry the Navigator with great views of the bridge and the statue of Cristo Rei, or perhaps the Museum of the Coches with all the Kings of Portugals state coches on the way by stop and have a Pasteis de Belem in the Antiga Confeitaria de Belem.
Lisbon as you again put the Castle you can get tram 28 part of the way up or go there by bus right to the gate or you can walk up and stop of at a few sites on the way the first is the church of Santo Antonio then round the bend to the Se (12th century Cathedral) a bit further up the hil is the church of Santa Luzia something to do with the Knights of Malta, at the side is two tiled panels one of pre earthquake Lisbon and one of cristians attaking the castle, also look out for the views of the city and river.
you can then follow the road round to the church of Soa Vincente de Fora or go up the hill to castle, there is a good cafe for a drink and to get your breath back before you go in ( you have to pay to go in now) but well worth it for the views. On the way back down try and find the way to the Military Museum I think one of the best sites in the hole of Lisbon.
In the Baixa area you could have a look round the Praca do Comercio with its big archway and statue of King Jose 1 and were the last king of portugal Carlos 1 was killed, then there is the Elevador de Santa Justa a Elevator with a cafe at the top again with great views and you can get travel cards the busses/trams and underground from here.
At the side of Rossio Station is the Elevador da Gloria up a big hill to Bairro Alto with the church of Sao Roque one of the most opulent in Portugal and Museum and the ruined church Igreja do Carmo left as it was after the 1755 earthquake.
If you fancy a half day by the seaside get the train to Cascais nice beaches and some good shops ( train for here is at the Cais do Sodre station )
The only other site you may have time to see is the Calousta Gulbenkian Museum its a bit out of the city but well worth a visit ( tube from the Rossio to Sao Sebastiao )
I think this will do for a two day visit hope this helps

They realy will help us find our ways.
We won't book the hotels in advance but will just go and see what w'll find.
What about the prices the give in hotels. Does someone know if bargaining is accepted or is the price in most hotels fixed.

Thanks again for your reply

Hi,

No bargaining at hotels, or in fact anywhere else!!

What kind of hotel do you want?

Dave, how many times did you visit Lisbon ?

By the way Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is just in the city centre. Baixa is just the tourist center.

Hello olissipon, sorry its taken so long to reply but have just changed internet suplier to BT so have been of for a bit. I have been to Lisbon twice on weekend breaks and this summer had a two week holiday on the Lisbon coast, staying at the 3* Sana Classic in Estoril a very nice hotel we traveled with Caravela Holidays part of T A P airways, with taxi tranfer to and from the airport to the hotel, and flights with T A P.

The weekend breaks were with,
http://www.expedia.co.uk
and again we stayed in a Sana hotel but this time in Lisbon itself the hotel we stayed in was the Sana Executive just by the park EdwardoVII and the tube station S Sebastiao, there are some great restaurants around here full of locals and not rip of prices as in some citys, and flights with B A.

Both T A P and B A fly from Heathrow to Lisbon a bit of a bind when you live in the Midlands but the city is well worth a visit.
