Hi ya. My mobile worked fine too in the maldives. I know what you mean about emergencies. I actually needed mine as my mum had been rushed into hospital while i was away. I was told not to come home but i still spent £60 on phone calls, but at least i could be in contact.

Hi Julie,

I would look at the following:-

Veligandu
Koomandoo
Filitheyo
Maayaafushi
Athuruga
White Sands
Vilamendhoo

Hope this helps. Personally from the list I would choose one of the top two if they are within budget.

Mobiles work very well, especially vodafone and t-mobile. However word of warning !!!, it is very expensive. OK it was 5 yrs since i went but i ended up with a bill for £300 for that month. It was a works phone so i got away with it. Best thing is to make use of TEXT messages as they are only around 20p - 50p. At least you will be contactable....

I stayed at sun island and they also had english plugs in the rooms !!

hope this helps

Have a look at this thread- it should help. Seems that if you are prepared for heavy showers then go for it :D

For the last two years we have been end of may(06) Club Faru and june (05) sth ari atoll (sun island) . Both times we had good weather with a couple of nights over the two weeks where it rained. But it isn't cold and normally its heavy but short lasting. We are going again this year at the end of May
hope this helps

i went to the maldives on honeymoon last year and we had no problems with our mobile. texts cost about 50p from pay as you go, probably less from contract.
not sure which is cheaper for calls as it was $8 a min from the landline in the room.

May i also add that you may not be able to book all inclusive here in this country but some resorts allow you to upgrade when at the island :D

I stayed with my wife at sun island about 6 years ago ( read my review ), the food is brillant. My wife is a veggie and has never ate so well over the two weeks, always something different and if you did like something you could just ask and they put it back on again some time over the next few days.

You wont want to come back

Just returned from two weeks at Sun Island, the weather was lovely apart from one day when it rained solidly for twenty four hours after that it was just short downpours ,there was an umbrella in the wardrobe,

Someone has added some super photos to our Maldives album. Anyone owning up to them? :D

I've been reading people's reviews on the Maldives . Could someone tell me about the currency? Although the Maldives have their own currency I get the impression that people tipped with USA dollars. Do I take currency or traveller's cheques. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I haven't been there but do know that you could use dollars. If you want to take traveller cheques take them in dollars.
I'm sure someone who has been can give you more practical tips :D

You really only need a small amount of US dollars for tipping and buying something to drink at Male airport - we take no more than $150 for two weeks.

All extras including excursions are added on to your room bill which you settle with credit card - no need for travellers cheques at all.

Thanks for that. Do you get any extra charges for using your credit card and which ones do they accept?
