I think it would be OK to walk around the Strat during the day, but it's a bit more seedy at night as there isn't anything else in the near vicinity so it may be advisable to take a cab at night.

Mark,

I know you have paid for your holiday but keep checking sites like Barbary Coast or even Oshea's for cheap rates near to your dates and maybe move central strip

Thanks for the replies.....

We booked the hotel as part of a package and are, therefore, unable to change unless we can convince the holiday rep in the resort otherwise

We did do some research first and put the comments on the safety of the area down to those staying there not being familiar with big city life.

We do plan to take either the Deuce bus or taxis to the centre of the strip both during the day and night as it will most probably be too hot to walk anywhere.

We are just a little concerned with walking out of the hotel and being greeted by gun/knife wielding characters who are after your possessions.

Hi Mark HT Mod,

So you and your family are going to Las Vegas in Sept! That's nice! Me and my husband has visited Vegas... I think it's 5 times and it's amazing city, nothing specially during the day but in the evening it really wakes up

And you are staying at Statosphere, we have never stayed at hotel but one thing you MUST do is in the evening take the elevator up in the tower and from there you will have a wonderful/amazing view over the whole Las Vegas, and if you like, you can ride a rollercoaster up there OUTSIDE the building....

Now to the safety advice, the Stratosphere is situtated in the north of "the strip" and it's not so far from "downtown" Las Vegas there you shouldn't be at night and also during daytime.... :!:

I agree with luci HT Mod who is saying that walk around Stratosphere during the day is ok but at night you should take a cab if you are going south of "the strip". I don't want to scare you but you wanted som advice.

When we, my husband and I have visited we always has stayed at the south of "the strip" our favorit hotel is Mandalay Bay, wondeful hotel with a lovley poolarea! :sun

The price is little higher but it's worth it. We have also stayed at Luxor, Excalibur and Monte Carlo all of them are good choices to, I would guess that Excalibur and Monte Carlo is the cheapest of they and Luxor is in the middle of them and Mandalay Bay.

So if you haven't booked the hotel yet, please go in and check the prices on these hotels. I can also recommend a hotel that I haven't stayed on but we met up a friend of my husband there in 2004 and it's also a good hotel, New York New York, it's also in the south of the strip.

I'm shure that you and your family will have a great time in Las Vegas! Here are few links that I hope will help you a little:

There's a lot of myths around so treat what you hear with an open mind.
You need to be sensible at night in Vegas just as you would in any city in the UK.
I have stayed downtown many times over the last few years and my wife and I walked around the backs of the casinos when moving around and had no problems whatsoever. The bus station downtown is a bit creepy at night, you get quite a lot of homeless and drunks around there but to be honest, I have always found the 'stories' about downtown to be exaggerated. I know the Strat is a bit isolated but as you say, you'll get the bus and that 's fine. During the daytime it's no hassle at all.

As I say, use common sense, don't have cameras hanging round your neck, that sort of thing and you'll be absolutely fine.

As long as those myths are unfounded. We will take the necessary precautions and enjoy our first stay in Las Vegas.

I have been to Las Vegas twice. I travelled with my husband, our two sons and their girlfriends. We stayed both times at the Golden Nugget in downtown LV. Even though we walked about during the evening, both in the area of the Golden Nugget (Fremont Street where there's a fabulous light show) and the Strip and the area of the Stratosphere, we never at any time felt that we were about to be mugged. We went to the Stratosphere in the evening and there were lots of people about. We travelled up the tower and had fantastic views of LV at night. It was fascinating to see that we were higher than the helicopters! The bit that I wasn't too keen on was when the tower swayed in the breeze.

We'd heard stories of how "dangerous" the place is at night but as long as you stick to the well-lit parts, where there'll be hundreds of people walking about I think you'll be perfectly OK. It's when you stray round the back of places where it's not so well-lit, or you stroll around with lots of "bling" on or cameras and bags hanging from your shoulders that you could have trouble. Hope you have a great holiday - you'll either love or loath LV - everyone who went absolutely loved it.

You are quite a way out there and now the Stardust is being demolished it could feel a bit isolated at night. Have to say we loved it. Have a meal alongside the canal in the Venetian at night, with the blue sky and the breeze you forget you're actually inside. Prices are reasonable too.

Don't think the demise of the Stardust will make much difference. Between Stardust and Stratosphere there are several casinos and a few timeshares.
Circus circus, Slots a Fun and Sahara to name a few. We have walked from Sahara to the Strat at night with no problems. Fairly quiet on that are of the atrip. I think the main problems arise when you go off strip a way.

Here isa link to a picture of the area.

Bottom left - The pink bit is part of Circus
Top centre (ish) - Directly above No 604 is the Strat
Section between LVB and Paradise - Sahara.

Zoom in to get a better idea. I hope this helps.

we stayed at the stratosphere last march
yes the area isn't as posh as the middle of the strip but we always felt happy there - just take the sensible precautions that you should take in any city

dont flash valuables around and enjoy it .... we certainly did
