I doubt the dogs will be allowed on the main beaches but it shouldn't be a problem 'out of town' and the on beaches that are not a big tourist pull.

Tolpuddle, Weymouth, Lyme Regis are all worth a visit. You are spoilt for choice in that part of the world.

Be warned that our only income is parking fees and fines. It is probably the same everywhere now, but only last week there has been correspondence in the Weymouth paper regarding poorly signed parking restrictions catching even the locals out. It has been a known problem for over a year so is obviously a nice little earner at £30 a throw.
I spoke to a parking warden last week as I actually paid to use a car park for the first time in 7 years, and asked her how long the grace period was. probably 5 minutes was the reply so I pointed out that the clocks were fast compared to the world clock. I was then told that most of the car park clocks are at least 2 minutes fast. (knocks the period of grace down somewhat!). Not to be outdone, the local bowling alley has started charging and some people turned up and parked, went inside to get some change for the meter, found out how expensive bowling was and changed their minds about staying so they walked back out and found their car clamped. All done in a reported time of 3 minutes according to the local press. So best to stay in East Dorset, but still keep your eyes peeled for parking signs.

Thanks for the warning! I dont drive so will be using the bus/trains to get about. Parents do drive but wont venture that far as we dont leave the dog all day, think we will stick to pay carparks if its risky! will try to keep pile of change in the car or leave 1 person in car whilst finding change :D

Sounds worse than round here, never got a ticket yet.....

Sorry stevebell001 but just because you have an issue with a parking situation I don't feel it reasonable to worry people unduly about parking in Dorset.
I live in Swanage, we have a similar problem, and have had for many years. Lots of people from away, ie visitors, don't realise that parking is restricted at the weekend during the summer months, unlike that in major towns where it is normally restricted during the week, then relaxed at the weekend. All you have to do is to read the sign. Don't take it for granted that the car that parked there before you is parked legally, maybe they have a disabled ticket. Also don't think that parking on the verge, the other side of the yellow lines is legal, because it isn't, and it wasn't 25 years ago when I got a ticket either.
We all know that the press like to sensationalise stories, and that people tell stories "thier way" to support the arguement.
Most of the clamping companies either started life in the towns or copy the dubious methods of those that did, the government is (excuse the pun) clamping down on these rouge companies on a daily basis.
Dorset, and more specifically Weymouth, are lovely places to visit, yes they do have parking restrictions, and indeed have to have due to the vast number of seasonal visitors, but let's not suggest that they are actually any worse than the rest of the country for the way that the local authority raises cash.
Let's be honest. Most of us have pushed our luck at some time or another by thinking we'll only be a minute, taken longer than we thought and finding a ticket on our car.......
And you're telling me you didn't come up with a story to try to get out of it?????
Chill a little, life is life.

I have a friend in Dorset and am lucky to get there 3/4 times a year.
If you are into shopping-have a little trip to Street to the Clarke's Village there I know it's in Somerset just round the corner form Glastonbury in fact-but my friend lives right on the border near Shaftsbury-also nice for a visit-so we often have a good shopping trip while we are there.
