My suggestion would be Tossa, smaller, quieter and with a lot of Spanish charm. I like the place so much that I'm going there this summer. If you look at the resort reports you can get an idea of whether it'll suit you.

all the resorts in the area will still be open then and all still busy.the weather should be great and still warm in the evenings.
for the best beaches you will have to go towards Estartit rather than tossa/lloret. The beaches at tossa/lloret and further south to calella are all shingle and not designed for romantic strolls
all the major resorts have british type bars,(not all of which are as bad as you fear) but if you look around you can find the smaller spanish bars/restaurants.
i personally dont particularly like tossa as it is a very small resort, and to do any travelling without a car you have to first go to lloret and then on from there.
with lloret, if you stay in the fenals area you are away from the "brits abroad" to a great extent but you can walk into the main town in about 15 minutes or get the local bus for 95cents.
hope this helps

Hi Aaron

Like CRICKETWATCHER I would suggest Tossa for a relaxing holiday,
although We are quite a few years older than you we have been going to Tossa for 17 years, early in September.

Have a look at tossacostabrava.com and get taste of the place from this regular visitors forum.

Hi have a look at these links, i have been to the costa Brava many times, if you like good restaraunts and a nice safe resort Tossa de mar, we fell in love with it, you are spolied for the choices of food and where to eat, no english so to speak pubs an odd one or two dottied around, but not loud or noisy and more near to the hotels, Santa susanna for very long beaches that you can walk for miles but although great for walking into malgrat or Pineda or hopping on the train for pennies, mostly hotel based although you are welcome in any and the stalls are all in front of the hotels at night playing pipe music, not the same class as food as in Tossa as most eat in hotels but a nice resort, for the most relaxing place and good walks calella de Parafrugell and llfranc views amazing, lovely places to eat, check them all out might be a bit quiet at end of sept though, any of these three, avoid calella not to be confused with the parafrugell one, avoid Loret,

hi
we have been going to the costa brava for the last 3 years we have been to calella which is a smashing place with plenty of shops and fabulous beaches the last year we went to malgrat and stayed in the maripins hotel which is spotless and has excellent food situated in the middle of the shops but laid back so the hotel is quiet there are plenty of bars of the main street such as champions, rovers return and eureka which show sport if that is what takes your fancy. you can walk up the prom to santa susanna lwhich is a short distane away or take the train to calella which is about a 10 minuite train ride away or you can go the other way to barcelona there is also a little train that takes you round the town to calella and up in the mountains. ;hope this helps for transfers from airport try giro transfers booked up on the net pay the driver when you get on he will be waiting at the airport for you.

Hi all

I like the sound of Tossa. I think we will go there this time!

Can anybody recommend accommodation in Tossa?

We are on a budget of max £320 for the week, ideally around £200-£250 for the week, but will stretch for nice place!

My pref is Self catering apartment (cook own breakfast and prepare lunch), but if the hotel is fair price will consider it!!

Thanks for the advice so far, and sorry for being a pain!!

Cheers,
Aaron

we went to Tossa same time last year - i couldn't recommend it enough! we will certainly be returning.

We booked a self catering room via venere.com

it really depends on what your after in resort

We are after something close to beach and pretty close to bars and restaurants. We would prefer a nice apartment, but can be pricy too.

As long as its good standard, no need for fancy and clean!! We're quite easy going!!

Cheers,
A

You're best bet would be to google it, asking for Costa Brava holidays.
I've done a quick scan on Directline Holidays, and they had quite a selection available.

I'd agree with Tossa as a resort - it's a great little place. I've often used http://www.bedbookers.com to find a hotel. They've got plenty of choice for the dates you specified, at anything from £130 to £700+.

Have a look and then read the reviews on this site, and at http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk

Good luck. :D

Blanes is a nice little resort too. It's further south than Tossa, neighbouring Lloret. If you are looking for a typically Spanish resort, I think you'd like Blanes. Loads of Spanish bars and restaurants and a very attractive harbout area. We've been 3 times. No 'Dog and Duck' type if you stay in the old end of town ( a few in the newer campsite area)

If you want a Spanish rather than British orientated resort go to northern Costa Brava. Llafranc, Tamariu, Callella De Pallafrugell, Palamos. All within about a hour of Gerona airport. If you look at web sites such as owners direct there are plenty of reasonably priced apartments on offer. To get the best out of this area you really need a car though. The coastline is stunning. Aiguablava is the most beautiful bay and not too busy in September if you avoid the weekend.
If you do go to Tossa take a drive north along the coast for fantastic scenary, although it has lots of twists and turns so can be a a bit sick making!
