So, now that the red dust has settled (mostly) and the Goa appreciation society is STILL live and kicking - we can now reflect.

Those of us who actively participate in the forum, or even those who are STILL "lurking" out there, must accept anothers viewpoint without getting all 'bot and hothered'. I really don't think that any of us have changed our minds about Goa. :We love it and that's all there is to it.. Sure, it's not perfect - but then, neither are we :(

Those who have never been, MAY be dissuaded from going, based on anothers viewpoint"¦or"¦other reasons.

The Goa Discussion forum is like no other. There is always someone out there who can give advice - and willingly. Ok, the advice is based on whoever's personal experience and we should be mindful of that. And (it has be said) there are very tight clutches of HT'ers who are well a bit cliquey (Hey, don't jump on head, ok :tdown ) - but that's also ok.

So .keep on Goa-ing Whatever action we take, is up to us - ultimately.

Well said ve94n. I totally agree with you. We all have minds of our own, what suits one does'nt neccessarily suit another.
Personally I love Goa for what it is, and I don't see it through rose tinted glasses either. :D

We stayed in Calangute this year and noticed it was considerably dirtier than Candolim. There seemed to be a lot of fly tipping,a problem not confined to Goa.If you bought a drink or can of anything when you finished it you had to carry it back to your hotel. In England we are used to having rubbish bins.

Yes,the mattresses on the beds were dirty and the hygeine at the shacks was somewhat dodgy.

Lots of corruption and beggars.Lots of seemingly uncontrolled development.

The thing is though despite all the bad things Goa is back in our blood and we will be back next year come what may.

This forum is for us all.Let everyone have a say no matter how much we may disagree.

Regards

Papa

Me and my wife first went to Candolim 8 years ago, went again 2 years back and have just returned back from our 3rd and last time. The place (in my opinion) has changed for the worst during that time. 8 years ago walking from Candolim to Calangute on the beach was a joy, hardly any shacks and no hassle, unfortunately not now. It's just too much. Our pet hates on this holiday were:
The porters at Dabolim, completely obnoxious and expecting a £1 tip for pulling a suitcase a matter of 10 feet.
Beach sellers constantly trying to sell us stuff. I didn't mind when they took a very polite "no thanks" for an answer, but constantly badgering us got on our nerves, especially waking us up!
Being blatently ripped off with bills in some places. I found that I had to keep a tally in my head sometimes.
The awful karaoke and 6th rate singers that a lot of the places have on most nights, believe me some of them wanted putting out of their misery (and mine).
As stated previously the rubbish situation appears to be getting a lot worse; we did our bit by taking our stuff back to the hotel but where did it end up?
What has happened to Sandpiper beer? I couldn't buy it anywhere. I know that it wasn't much kop but it certainly made you appreciate other beer more.
The amount of taxis that there are, I don't know whether it was because of the month (March) but they were everywhere.

Things that we did like:
The terrifying bus rides and even more terrifying ferry crossings, I wasn't religious until then! I was that frightened that I only went on the ferry 6 times! Truly an experience not to be missed, especially trying to get off with about 30 scooters and motorbikes at the same time.
Georges 'restaurant' in panjim opposite the big church, next to the roundabout. 2 spicy mackeral with salad for 60 r's, a really good meal (so good I went there twice).
Beach shacks; alright I realise that hygiene isn't top of their list but meals were usually good and the lads were a laugh.
Bono's toilets, according to my wife, which were of the highest quality.
Restaurants that we had good meals in Candolim were:
Floyd's Hut - 1 good meal and 1 bad.
Inferno - never a bad meal there, you may have to wait a little while as it's usually very busy but always top class.
The Curry House (I think it's called that), opposite Eye Sight on Beach Road up a flight of stairs - also never had a bad meal there.
Alexanders on Beach Road - excellent food and service.
Stonehouse - brilliant live music and great meals. The guy who owns it, Chris, is a top man.
Ingo's night market for some good and some dodgy live music.
Watching the sunset having a beer in a shack.
As with Dave, these are our own personal comments and our own feelings. I genuinely like the place and the people but I honestly believe that it is heading in a direction that I personally dislike. 8 years ago there were cows wandering around all over the place, even 2 years ago there were quite a few, now there are hardly any to be seen in the Candolim/Calangute area. The River Princess situation is a standing joke, but the beach erosion because of it and the oil on the sand certainly isn't. Obviously some people will be upset by my comments but it's my own opinion.

Even paradise could get boring.... Thats why we love it

Paradise still exists in Goa - it's called Palolem.......

Morjim beach too. Would be terrible if too many shacks sprung up.

Palolem certainly WAS paradise in 1994, but it has changed since then.
Still lovely though.

I agree PPC. Palolem has lost its paradise status, i would have to downgrade it to lets say a "haven" and i may be being kind at that.
I'm certainly not against change, and a greater number of visitors means more facilities, but wish they had got it right.
Called in there in December and although the number of shacks was about the same as the previous March, what hit me like a bombshell was the amount of BLUE PLASTIC on show.
Normally the shacks and huts blend in with the coconut palm backdrop but sorry to say this time it was a disgraceful sight.
The shack owners really need to dress the place up before we find a new "paradise".[/img]

Yes I would agree that Calangute is dirtier than Candolim (and getting dirtier) Mabey thats why I like it so much more , it's far closer to what India is really like and it's India I've always loved. Candolim round about the Elephant Shop is far more "touristy and as it gets busier year on year its mainly shops, hotels, and eating places, that are noticable. The dirt and garbage is not going to improve, it,s an Indian problem and believe me, just try driving up the road to Mumbai and you'll never regard Calangute as dirty again!! Driving the last hour or so into Mumbai through the shanty towns and seeing hundreds squatting on top of a big water pipe doing their ablutions puts Goa into perspective Goa is for me, and lots that write here, what we are looking for, but hopefully loads of the new first timers that are trying it, will be appalled by it, and go home and tell all their friends what a dump it is, I know I have several friends who have asked me, and I,ve told them it's not for them, as I know what they expect of a holiday and they certainly would'nt find it in Goa Alan

Goa may be dirty and a bit of a dump but it's the most beautiful dump I've been to and highly addictive! Personally speaking, I love it!
