Gail, this will be my 4th visit to Skiathos, i love it. I do love the beaches but i also love walking and Skiathos is great for that. Not too hilly and just enough to get the adrenaline going.. The views are lovely when you get inland a bit!
We tend to stay along the coast road in Troulos although this year we are staying in Koukanaries. these are very laid back resorts and more to my liking.
I do however like to go into the town in the evenings and hunt out some of the excellent tavernas and restaurants in the narrow streets of the old town.
You asked about Samos and Halkidiki. I'm afraid i haven't stayed in either place myself but a workmate has stayed in Hanioti several times and she loves it.
Another site i use. http://www.clearspray.co.uk has a board dedicated to Samos and has personal views of the island and a good photo gallery among other things. There are also sections on other islands, Skiathos included and a message board.
Hope this helps!
John
Since I was the one who set up this post in the first place and got this whole debate on the film going, I'd like to say thank you for all the good info!!!
I have decided on Lassi, 2 weeks, 4 star hotel with sea views (we're pretty romantic) and we're renting a car to explore Sami. We love long drives!
I wish there was a filming tour as then you wouldn't miss out on any of the places that you saw in the movie. I would also like to say that even though the film wasn't to everyone's tastes, I certainly enjoyed it and stick to my guns!!!!!
I shall try to lap up everything the island has to offer. If any (there are some experts I see!) have any secret places or things we should definately check out, then let me know.
In the meantime peace and happy holidays to all those on this post! x
Buy a good road map because the ones given by the car hire places are very basic and only usually cover the main roads.
There was a book published by the Daily mail to coincide with the release of the film. If i remember, it was printed in conjunction with lonely planet and goes into great detail about the making of the film and all the locations they used. It is really worth trying to get your hands on a copy if you are such a fan of the film.
I am fortunate to have one..............and no i won't part with it...........sorry!
John
Glad to hear you got boked up - I'm sure you'll love the island
Pargaluvva, Thomson have holidays available for Samos the 1st and 2nd weeks of June.

Hi Grecophile. Checked Thomson's and nothing available for Samos . Looks like Kos or Halkidiki. Gx
It would be so cool to meet people who were involved in the film, they must have really interesting stories to tell...
Mooowah
Moonwah, yes he does live in Kefalonia, at the boat yard in Lixouri he is Greek his wife English, may not remember meeting us now but I am sure it will be ok to approach him, usually hang out a lot at the Apolafis which is a gorgouse place but hard to book into as they now cater mostly for the Ceches and Dutch as the English brouchers disbanded them which is our loss
So this restaurant is very segregated then? Is that what you meant? Like its hard to book as it is expensive and only two types of ppl go there...
I don't care for fancy restaurants much so I probably won't care if I don't go there! Thanks for the suggestion though.
I really want to visit that beach- its meant to be stunning. I can only afford a week now (!) so can I get a bus there or is it hours and hours away?
Any tips would be great guys!
Its only stunning when photographed from a distance as it usually is from the road above. Its not sandy and the stones shelve very steeply into the water. The road from Lassi to Fiskardo, passing Myrtos, is spectacular and well worth doing as is a stop on the way at Assos. Dont know if a bus does this trip but you can certainly do it on an excursion
All the silly travel mags said it was sandy and stunning to see! What do they know eh- you've been there after all!
Dont get me wrong, it is an amazing sight because of the colours and the height from which you usually view it. When we've been there its nearly always deserted, 2 or 3 camper vans and just a handful of people.
We hired a car in Kafelonia last year. we set off at 8am on the monday morning and were up at Myrtos at 0840, get there early as it gets busy with the coach trips, we then went to Assos for 30 mins which was gorgeous, off again next stop Fiskardo, again really nice, coffee and a snack, then we headed towards Agia Emifia, then down towards Sami which i wasnt that impressed with. from Sami we went to the caves, again was not over impressed. Over the mountains in to Argostoli and we were back at the San lorenzo Village for 3pm, quite a busy day. Tuesday we drove to Skala about 50 mins, we had a good 4 hours , and stopped off at Kateios, and loudras, quick stop at lidl and back at 3pm, The map looks daunting, but this was my first drive abroad and i found it quiet easy, just watch out as there lots of goats on the road up to Myrtos. One of our favourite nights was taking the ferry over to Lixouri where we had a nice meal and came back about 11pm, a few drinks in Argostoli and taxi back to Lassi. Any more info required, spends, places to eat just ask.

I was going for 2 weeks but on further reflection I can only afford a week.
Is it worth it to still rent? And how much is it? I'll be staying in Lassi.

If you get up early enough to set off, you can get around the island in a day, seeing the main places. I booked with greekstones over the internet, have a look at their site, it cost me 110 Euros for 3 days, i had a Fiat punto with a/c, i also had the extra insurance. They dropped it off for me at my accomadation and picked it up. It was in tip top condition and was spotless.
I accept that you could 'see' most of the island in a day but no way could you do it justice. You would spend more time in the car than actually getting a feel for the towns and villages. Far better to take your time and enjoy it than race round trying to cram in everything in one go, you're on holiday after all.
Yes this is true, well I'll have a look at the website anyway. Thanks!
