When we were in Mexico last year we arrived the day before the match between Arsenal & Barcelona, so on the first full day of our holiday all the men went into Playa Del Carmen to find a bar.
They got back about 12 hours later absolutely smashed.
A very good way to start a holiday.
I love my holidays but I also love my football - never miss it at home and try not to miss it whilst on holiday. Have also met some lovely people from near and far while watching the footy on TV in a bar - had many a lively discussion.
Myself, I'm not bothered about football and I set my video (got a V+ box this year - even better) for anything I really can't miss, but last August we were in Turkey during the Big Brother final and there was no way I was waiting till I got home to watch it We found a nice bar with a big screen, watched the whole night of it, and had a very enjoyable evening with people from all over the UK.
I absolutley have to have a tv and dvd player on holiday. I have to be up at 4.30am for work so on holiday its so nice to get home from a nice meal open a bottle of wine and stay up late to watch a film without having to be up early the next day its also nice to watch waiting for everyone to get ready to go out. Never have it on during the day though. Last June the first day of our holiday England where playing and we where in a dilema as to watch it or sunbathe and play in the pool. We stepped from the plane into rain so we watched the footie and as soon as the ref blew for full time the sun came out! A sign from above I think.
We've been on holiday before and not even switched the TV on in our room. We prefer non touristy places and so avoid resorts with lots of kareoke bars, english/irish pubs and fish & chips (no offence to those who like them, it's just not our cup of tea on holiday )
I was in Hong Kong during one of the Euro competitions. There was no way we were going to get to sleep at 3am as the rather boisterous BA crew in the next room were watching England play..so got up and watched it myself.
chivas, to answer your earlier question re hols in 1990, no I don't recall coming across Germans at all really. It was pretty much all brits if I remember. Had we been in a Spanish resort no doubt there would have been just as many if not more Germans than us but we were in Greece in a particularly 'brit' resort.
I'm not so into it now (though like the final night) and always holiday whilst its on but I don't mind missing a fortnight.
Back then though, and especially as we had crappy rainy weather, I could've done with having some sort of televisual access!
I go to Tunisia and the locals are fanatical about football, so it is usually on television wherever you go and difficult to avoid.
I think after saving so hard for our well deserved holidays, we all deserve to do what each of us likes. Whether thats watching sport/soaps etc, it all adds to a nice relaxing holiday.
Must admit, I did get to glimpse half hour of the Big Brother Final last year in Turkey, made me happy and the Efes went down a lot quicker too
Each to their own, what a strange world we would be in if we all liked the same things.
