SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex; it has a mirror that sits between the lens and film or in a digital camera the CCD (Charge Couple Device) or CMOS (Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) which captures your image electronically.
As you look through the view finder the image comes through the lens and is reflected via the mirror to the view finder, when you take a picture the mirror lifts out of the way and allows the image to be captured by either the film or digitally.
An SLR camera allows you to interchange one type of lens for a different type such as a 50 - 200mm lens which will give you a zoom function, for with example a Macro lens that will allow you to take very close detailed pictures of an object.

You'll have no problems whatsoever. I take mine everywhere I go along with my other camera equipment. X-rays won't damage digital media.

Been using digital media for years (first camera used Floppy discs was a Sony) I personally haven't had any trouble with security with them and I also take a PDA which has two media cards in as well again without problems

just wish I could afford a newer SLR we have too many holidays
