Hi Groovybaby,

Like Mustafabun I've been to many resorts in Turkey: Bodrum, Kusadasi, Altinkum, Akbuk, Marmaris, Icmeler, Gocek, Calis, Fethiye, Hisaronu, Oludeniz, Patara, Kalkan, Kas, Antalya and Istanbul.

From a purely objective view I would say that Marmaris has a lot to offer -to the right person. It's loud and brash, has scores of British-style bars and restaurants playing VERY LOUD thumping music. The sea-front is one looong pub I guess.

The long, thin grey beach is directly in-front of this stretch of British Pub-style joints - which also happens to be on a busy, main road. I'd say you'd never be more than 10 foot from a bar out there - even on that narrow strip of beach!

To me, Marmaris has a tacky 'Blackpoolesque' kind of feel to it. It caters for the Brits - which is why it doesn't feel particularly Turkish; and it seems to attract lots of people from the North of England. I'm not sure if it's because it is 'Blackpoolesque' - and that's why they like it so much, or because anywhere with sunshine seems good!

Marmaris is at its best at night - viewed from a distance. It's all lit up, and looks rather pretty. If you can get about 1 kilometre away, you'll also be able to view it without wearing industrial ear-plugs (the type pneumatic-drillers use when mining underground)

Marmaris would be great for Stag-Nights, particularly as the place seems to have a penchant for featuring Male Bellydancers in Drag, and hosting drinking contests. 'Drown Your Sorrows in a Fishbowl' can be a real bargain - at Happy Hour.

Adolescents would also fall in love with Marmaris. It has a 'funfair' feel, and there's thousands of black-haired barmen (cos black hair means they're handsome) with names like Tom, Ted, Paddy or MustafaSnog. You'll see these British adolescents swooning over Teddy Trouble or Teddy Bullsh*t in Bar Street; and the girls' ages range from 16 to 78ish.

Icmeler sits next to Marmaris (it's at the other end of that long, narrow beach) but it's a much quieter, watered-down version of Marmaris.

Both Marmaris and Icmeler are geared towards the Brits - and there's nothing wrong in that if that's what you want out of a holiday. It's worth travelling out of the centre, as there's some beautiful countryside around that area. The main road which runs from Icmeler is very attractive too; with lots of exotic plants, trees and shrubs.

All in all, you could have a lot of fun there. But it's not true Turkey.

i am quite sure strawberry that the marmaris town council will be interested in your comments .i do not see the comparisson between marmaris and blackpool ,as far as i am concerned the best thing to come out of blackpool is the m6, but that is only my opinion.

I love Icmeler and while I would go to another place in Turkey for a week( you have to try somewhere else). I would only go to Icmeler for my main holiday. There is no comparison to Blackpool. I have been to Gumbet, Olu Deniz and Belek if I had choice in the future I would always go to Icmeler. This is because, sadly this is our last Turkish holiday as my son is moving to Canada and my daughter to Australia so I guess they will be my holiday destinations if I ever want to see my family again. ( do you think it was something I said).

Just a point from strawberrys post the beach and the beach bars are at least 50 metres from the main road/boulevard in Marmaris.

I could pick a lot of misquotes from the whole post but rather just let it die off as everyone has their own views of every place they go to.

In reply to Strawberrys post,I am from the north of England and hate Blackpool, but love Icmeler and Marmaris.I was at both resorts last year and must admit I did meet one couple from our village in Icmeler, but most of the many friends I have made over the years visiting these resorts are surprisingly from the south of England!.It doesnt mean us Northerners prefer the larger busier resorts.

John Toohey,

I never quoted anybody in my post; I gave my own opinion of Marmaris and Icmeler - nobody else's! What do you mean: my misquotes? :? .

As I've already said, Marmaris and Icmeler suits some people - and it obviously suits you. I'm surprised that you think the bars are 50 metres away from the beach: they looked more like 5 metres away to me. :yuck

Maybe you're talking about a different beach - in a different resort?

strawberry maybe you should read the post properly and not between the lines.

Nothing in my post says the bars are 50 metres away from the beach.

YOU did say and I QUOTE "The long, thin grey beach is directly in-front of this stretch of British Pub-style joints - which also happens to be on a busy, main road. I'd say you'd never be more than 10 foot from a bar out there - even on that narrow strip of beach! "

I corrected you as to people visiting the place for the first time they may have it in their head that cars are going to be flying past the beach where the bars are and that wouldn't really be safe for their children in case one decided to wander off.

I have never seen that green smiley used before btw

>>that Marmaris has a lot to offer -to the right person. It's loud and brash, has scores of British-style bars and restaurants playing VERY LOUD thumping music. The sea-front is one loon pub I guess<<

It also has a quite side as well, walk straight up the beach past the bars and restaurants up to wards Faros bar keep walking for a few minutes and you will find many a nice quite bar so Marmaris does have both.

>>The long, thin grey beach is directly in-front of this stretch of British Pub-style joints - <<

Again yes there are " British Pub-style joints" but there are also some "Turkish Pub-style joints" as well

>>which also happens to be on a busy, main road<<

The main road is NOT near the beach front at all. :hmmm

>> and it seems to attract lots of people from the North of England. I'm not sure if it's because it is 'Blackpoolesque' - and that's why they like it so much, or because anywhere with sunshine seems good! <<

LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL... spoken like a true southerner! :rofl :kiss

>>Marmaris is at its best at night - viewed from a distance<,

No Mamrmaris has many interesting things to see both day and night.. the Castle, the Marina, the Bazaar to name 3.

>>particularly as the place seems to have a penchant for featuring Male Bellydancers in Drag,<,

There are a couple of pubs that have male Bellydancers but you can easy find something to watch! Think i have seen 2 male Bellydancers in the 6 times i have been.

>>thousands of black-haired barmen (cos black hair means they're handsome) with names like Tom, Ted, Paddy or MustafaSnog.<<

Ok this bit is true!.. but it is still a great place to holiday! 8)

We tend to stay in the Armutalan area of Marmaris so don't notice the thumping music etc that others have commented on. Just lovely restaurants that are very quiet come midnight.I think Marmaris offers a variety of nightlife to suit all nationalities. I much prefer Marmaris in the quieter months. That's just a personal choice.Have never visited Icemeler but hope to rectify that this year.
