Hi everyone!!! Not my usual forum (99.9% of the time in Egypt!!!), but Im off to Majorca at the beginning of July and have a few q's....wondered if anyone can help?!
We're doing it all ourselves....booked own apartment, own flights. Wondered if anyone had recommendations for car hire, want to collect from the airport when we arrive and drop off there too when we go home, looking to spend no more that £100 for the week, and just need something around the size of a clio/ka.
Second Q: How much should I allow for food etc for the week? going completely self catering and have no idea of the cost of meals in restaurants etc.
Last Q: whats the temp likely to be around the first week of July?
Thanks!!
We visit Mallorca about 4 or 5 times a year. We have used a number of car hire companies but now only use Centauro. We find their prices the best and they are located at the airport. You can book but dont have to pay till you get there, so if for any reason you change your mind you are not out of pocket. They are always friendly and helpful, and on many occasion I have had a free upgrade. I would advise you to book a diesel car as if you intend to do any travelling there is a huge difference in fuel consumption. You need to fill the car before you hand it back and we usually fill up at the airport - as you approach the main terminal building you will see a sign for Gasolinera. If you use Centuaro regularly you can become a gold member which brings many benefits. Last Sunday our flight was delayed by 18 hours. We had brought our car back etc. but left the airport to return to our house for a few hours. Centauro gave us an excellent deal on a car for the few hours involved. You can book online and then pay at the airport when you arrive. Have a good time whatever you do.
Temperture in early July will more than likely be in the high twenties. PP has some very nice restaurants but it really depends on what you like. If you want to keep the price down you will find plenty of pizza / pasta places and with house wine could probably come out under 30 euros per couple. If you like good seafood and steak and food, perhaps in restaurant near the sea front, expect to pay more, perhaps allowing 50 or 60 euros per couple. I am sure you will find plenty of choice to suit your budget and your taste.
We went to Puerto pOllensa last year and booked a car online through 'carjet'. When we got to the airpost it was a local car hire company who we had looked at booking with but they were far more expensive. If you are taking children don't bother to hire a car seat - just drive round the corner to the local Carrrefour - we got one for 8 euros. Carjet wanted 4euros a day to hire a car chair!!!
PP has lots of restaurants, for a cheap meal look out for "Menu Del Dia" (Menu of the Day). You can get a three course with a 1/2 bottle wine or other drink for around 13 Euros per person. I recommend TOTS which is in the pedestrian lane behind the large Chinese restaurant on the corner of the main roundabout at the port. Another is the Celler La Parra (no Menu Del Dia here, just cheap prices) on the main Pollensa road about 1/2 mile up from the roundabout.
The Indian restaurant on the square is excellent and also the large Chinese (Dragon Oriente) on the Formentor road just behind the Hotel Eolo. There are so many good eating places that it's all down to personal taste and cost.
You might like to look here for airport transfers...

Thanks for you replies guys. Sounds like tis gonna be pretty hot!!! And I love my food....sounds like I'll have plenty of choice!!! Thanks again
as mentioned above Puerto Pollensa has LOADS of different restaurants. The cheapest Menu del Dia are often only at lunchtimes around 7-8 euros a head. Don't be initimated by the fact that they're full of locals - they're tremendous value.
There are several places around & down the side streets off the main square which is a great place for people watching & letting your kids (if you have them) run about a bit.
To get an idea of some of the places, have a look at http://www.puertopollensa.com/restaurants_bars_cafes.html but these are only a selection & the sample menus often promote the more expensive A la Carte options - Set Menus are often terrific value.
Above all you'll have a great time - I'm about to go out there again this Tuesday.
We are hoping to go to Puerto Pollensa next year. Could anyone tell me if there are wheelchair accessible taxis available and also what is it like for wheelchair users. I have a 16 year old going with me so do the bars have some kind of entertainment on. I am not expecting it to be very lively but hopefully there is something to do.
Can't answer for the taxis, but the resort is very flat and has a terrific long smooth flat prom for walking. From observation over many years I can say that the resort is very popular with wheelchair users. The nightlife is fairly low key, there are music bars and a club but it's a long time since I was 16 so cannot speak with authority.
