Hi
Just returned today from Riu Waikiki with Portland Holidays.
Had some items stolen from my room, cigarettes, afttershave, childrens presents. All other valubales were in the safe.
There was no sign of forced entry, so I'm guessing whoever took these items had a key - a member of staff perhaps.
Has anyone else had this kind of problem at this hotel?
Spoke to Manageress who was extremly unhelpful, said as it wasn't in the safe there was nothing she could do. Pointed out that it wouldnt fit in the safe.
I also said there was no sign of forced entry, so must be someone who had a key.
She said she only had my word that these items were in fact stolen and for all she knew I could be making it up!!
I asked her to call the police as I felt that it was most likely an inside job. She refused. She said I would have to go to the police station. She wouldnt give me a map of where it was, tolfd me to get a taxi and they would take me there - turns out it was only 10 minutes away!! Still cost me 12 Euro's return. Turns out they couldnt give me a crime report. Gave me a leaflet and said they couldnt do anything till I called the number on the leaflet and got a reference number!
Did the hotel manageress not know this. Or is this the first crime that has happened at this hotel.
This completely ruined what was otherwise a great holiday.
On another note, I have Axa travel insurance through portland. The receipt for the items were in the bags that were stolen. Does anyone know if they are likely to pay out without receipts, and/or will they refuse on the grounds that the items were not in the safe (even though there was no room)
I did go to the Spanish police today and got a report and crime reference number, so will contact AXA tomorrow.
I would like to knowfrom anyone who knows anout travel insurance who can advice me on the chanves of them paying out.
And also anyone with bad experience with this hoel, especially theft.
Thanks in advance
The attitude of the hotel manageress is appalling, it is a genunine member of the Riu Group?
What puzzles me is this - why didn't you obtain the assistance of your Portland Representative?
I hope you have success with your claim, and I would make a major complaint to the Riu Group if the hotel is truly part of it.
Peter
Also don't forget you probably have insurance excess to pay (usually the first £50), depends how much the goods are worth.
Here in Cyprus the police do not give a report, just a crime number so it is not unusual to have difficulties at the police station however I too am shocked at the attitude of your hotelier.
Please, please make a report with your rep before you go. Without this, your claim will be substantially weakened.

Brill, thanks very much
When I visited a couple of years ago my Von Dutch cap was stolen from the room. Doesn't sound a big deal, but those caps were quite expensive (the real deal I'm talking about here) and my gran had some cigs stolen too. Hated the hotel really. Was glad it was close to some bars to get out every night.
