Apologies for reviving an old thread BUT
IF Italians have two pin plugs what the heck are the travel adapters for Italy that I am seeing on places like Amazon as a set of THREE in a flat three arrangement ???
So which is it NOW
Northern or Southern European plugs or special three pin one
ESPECIALLY in Roma in mobile homes

My understanding was that the centre pin/hole in Italian plugs and sockets was for the earth and that a standard 2 round pin European adaptor would work ie - it fitted into the two outside outside holes in the socket. You wouldn't want to plug a high voltage appliance in without earthing it and I'm no expert, but I would imagine that it would be OK to use with the sort of things we take on holidays eg chargers and travel kettles and the like?

Thank you that is definitely a good site to know about and has been saved
Although it does show what plugs it just added to my puzzle of WHICH to take
looks like an email to the camping site is needed

As long as you aren't planning to plug in and use high voltage appliances that need to be earthed then you will be OK woth the standard 2 round pin adaptor which will fit into the two outside holes in the socket, The website that PeteB referred you to confirms this.
