I always like to try and learn at least please and thank you before I visit a foreign country but I struggled with the Turkish as they seemed to pronounce things differently wherever we went. I wouldn't worry though as everything is written in Turkish and English ans they all speak very good English.

Great idea to learn some words. It will be appreciated. I always go for the simple ones for obvious reasons. There is usually a thread on here for phrases so you could use the search facility. Here are some of the ones I use (badly)

Hello : Merhaba (as you read it)
Good Morning : Gunaydun (goon - eye - dun )
Good evening : iyi akshamlar (ee yee ack sham lar)
Thanks : Teshek-kur edirim ( te shek oor ee der im)
One beer : Bir Bira (beer beera)

Hi, as mentioned by Basil Brush, I got the free Turkish language download from BYKI. It is excellent, thoroughly recommend it. I'm using it alongside a Book and CD I purchased from Ebay - they compliment each other. Great way of learning.
