Could anyone who has experienced power surges in their Turkish property let me know please as I'm trying to build a picture. I'm not talking about the usual power cuts, but the kind of thing which causes damage to appliances. Our place in Bodrum recently suffered from this and it has cost a good few hundred Euros to repair all manner of appliances.
For the more technically minded - we have a fairly modern RCD unit, which seems to have offered absolutely no protection. I am no stranger to wiring in the UK and have done some in Turkey - had the shocks to prove it - but this is definetely not normal, even by Turkish standards.
Ah....Turkish electrics! I have experienced surges but they are getting fewer. There's not a lot you can do. Maybe check that the place has a decent earth connecton. The rcd protects what happens from the inside not from the outside i think.you can surge protectors but they will only isolate your appliances not your wiring
Yes, I can put up with a fair amount but a dishwasher, fridge, T.V all badly damaged and now switching off all the unused appliances at night in case it happens again - must be a better solution. The RCD is supposed to work when earth faults are detected so I can see days/weeks/months of fun with this over the summer.
Bodman you need to get a surge supression unit if you are having that many problems, where you can get one I dont know?? the biggest prob I have had is computer power supplies which seem to go quite easily, the rest of the domestic appliances seem to be ok. Only other advice for anyone reading this is if you have a computer modem disconnect when thunder storms come as I have gone through a couple of those as well!!
Exactly, where to get one? A lot of the time people just scratch their heads when yoiu finally manage to explain things like that. Still, Rome and all that.
