I've booked with James a number of times and had pretty good experiences all round. Then this year I booked a last minute week in Portugal. When we arrived we both got electric shocks from all the kitchen appliances straight off. This was much worse if we weren't wearing shoes! It was also worse for my partner, who has some neurological problems. The James rep came round quickly but was fairly skeptical. We persuaded her to take a shoe off and touch the dishwasher and she was then prepared to be convinced, but still seemed quite casual. She offered to move us but we were only there a week and had unpacked, etc, so we opted to wait for the electrician instead. Despite being told he'd come that day we waited nearly two days. When he came he told us that the villa hadn't ever been earthed! Good job neither of us has a heart complaint and there wasn't a child staying. When I got home I wrote to James to tell them of my experience and they fobbed me off with silly 'we take safety very seriously', 'we are sorry for your distress' type comments. For some reason I imagined they might be quite worried about their general safety standards and about customers getting electrocuted, but they didn't seem to be. So far as well as the platitudes I've been offered £50 off my next booking. It's not the money (I probably wouldn't book with them again anyway) but I really did imagine they would take safety, and particularly electrical safety, seriously. So I'm very disappointed.
