For hotels it would be the Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa having stayed there through a number of name changes from when it was the Royal Garden Riverside. Great resort style feel in the city, great boat service to the Skytrain, plenty of choice of resturants should you feel like eating within the hotel. A reasonable alternative for those who don't want to pay the higher prices of the top-end river side hotels like the Oriental and Peninsula but want a river side location. A good four star property.

Having said that we now stay in serviced apartments whenever we visit Bangkok and feel they offer a higher degree of comfort and luxury than a hotel. (Le Bua for example).

I also enjoyed the Landmark, stayed there twice, great location.
Very close by is the Bel Air Princess which is a 3 star and quite small for Bangkok as it has around 160 rooms, we stayed there this year and the rooms were very good , also the breakfast was as good as the Dusit Thani which is 5 star.

We really liked the Landmark, but the Royal Orchid Sheraton is right on the river and is excellent too

Thats what I thought too. I suppose its a case of what hotels are used by the British tour ops...the Landmark tend to feature in many brochures. But Bangkok is stuffed with great hotels that don't feature too much on the radar....like the Grand Hyatt, and the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit,Banyan Tree, The Sukothai. I've only used four hotels in my Bangkok stays...the Classic Place, Bangkok Marriott Resort, Le Bua and Somerset Suwan Park...I've not been disappointed in any of them.

I loved the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa as well. Just preferred the situation of the Landmark. I would just love to try out the Peninsula though :D

I see the Bangkok Marriott is in Tripadvisors top 100 hotels in the world list now. I've always had a fancy for the Sukothai...maybe one day.

The landmark is great and fab location too, The Rembrandt is also good, close by to the skytrain as well but in a bit of a quieter location.
The Bel Aire is also not bad, rooms good and a decent size, also they let us check in at 6am when we got there early!
