My daughter & I stayed in Port El Kantoui,3 years ago, and didn't have a problem going out & about at night. We stuck to the main roads and well lit places, & took the same sensible precautions as we would in any other country.
I've been going to Tunisia on my own for the past 9 years and never had any problems walking around, day or night. One or two of the locals might call out 'hello' to you, but I either ignore them or just give a cheery wave or even simply say 'aslemma' (hello) and carry on walking. I can honestly say I feel safer walking round Sousse at night than I do walking around Southend. As Helen says, just take sensible precautions. Taxis are plentiful so you can always find one to take you back to your hotel if you feel in the slightest bit uneasy.
we had no problems walking around PEK last jan with our little daughter, didnt feel worried in any way, felt safer than i did in the uk
I've been to Hammamet many times and have on one occasion also stayed at the Phenicia. As many others have said I often feel safer there than I do here. I've taken taxis on my own in the middle of the night and never had any problems. If you use the same common sense you'd use anywhere else when you go out at night, with perhaps a little extra as you'll be in an unfamiliar place, you should be fine.

I can't speak for Hammamet because I have never been there but as a single girl in her early 30's who has been to PEK 14 times I can honestly say I have never felt threatened or been overly worried about walking out on my own in the evenings. As the others have said just take the same precautions as you would anywhere at night and you should be fine. The locals guys will try to chat with you and maybe walk alongside you for a while but that's all and eventually will wander off if they see your really are not interested.
Hope this will help to put your mind at rest.
Leanna
