Will be holidaying in Santorini at the start of August as part of Helen's group. We'd really appreciate your opinion on the studios and resort when you return. Can't wait. How many of you are going to be staying there? You are the only person that weve heard of that has actually booked to go there. It seems really nice on some of the websites. Have a good holiday.

Looking forward to your report, as we have scoured loads of websites and as Shirley says we have yet to find anyone who has stayed there. I was beginning to think that it doesn't exist.

Six of us going - 2 adults and 4 teenagers!!! 50 years this year since the last eruption, could be interesting!

We've booked 3 apartments, B & B, so will give you run down on accommodation and food, hopefully breakfast is plentiful as the 2 boys eat for Queen and country!

The temp. looks set to rise considerably over the next week so we're expecting to fry!

One piece of advise we have been given is to take a 'Jungle Formula' plug-in and leave it switched on in room, especially at night as lots of mosquitos, also have the roll-on version for out and about.

The boys want to go shark fishing, which I have seen advertised but not sure I agree with - terrified of sharks but don't believe in harming for pleasure. Just hope there's none swimming anywhere near the mainland as will not set foot in water, even if only tiddlers!!!

I have never been bothered by mozzies in Santorini in 5 trips there.

We always stay in Perivolos (near Perissa) and having been 5 times find it relaxing from the moment we get off the plane.
Santorini (or Thira)is an island of extraordinary beauty like nowhere else and it is my own personal heaven on earth.
Whether you arrive by air or sea you are immediately struck by the volcanic cliffs of red brown rock topped by clusters of gleaming white sugar cube homes and villages - likened to the icing on a cake, or layers of teeth! The sheer volvanic cliffs, rise straight from the deep blue sea, and have layer upon layer of red volcanic rock .
The island itself was originally circular and was formed into its current crescent shape by an immense volcanic eruption 3,500 years ago. The eruption wiped out the Minoan civilisation in Crete 70 miles to the south leaving the world's biggest caldera and four smaller islands. You can visit the Minoan remains at Akrotiri in the south.
The opposing side of the island in contrast gently slopes down to the sea and has hot to walk on black sand beaches.
Santorini's has excellent light - there is little in the way of vegetation except for vines and tomatoes which are grown in abundance and contribute to the making of tasty tomato sauces and pseudokeftedes (tomato balls- local delicacies) and the wines are very well recommended owing to the type of soil the grapes are grown on. The volcanic earth is grey or red, yet the contrasts between the deep blue of the sea , the azure of the sky and the redness of the rocks provides a dramatic and fascinating landscape which will grace many a photograph I'm sure.
Owing to the large deep caldera there are many cruise ships which visit the island so prices are more expensive than other lesser known Greek islands. It is a case of shopping around and vsisiting the more off the beaten track little local gems of places with no menus and blue & white checked tablecloths and wicker chairs, rather than the caldera view top price places with plush seating and starched tablecloths! (Saying that though there are some splendid posh restaurants if you want to go out somewhere special!)

Pyrgos Taverna on the Right hand side on the way up to the hill village of Pyrgos is beautiful, it's situated in a converted windmill and offers a panoramic view of the whole island - it's not cheap but if you want a special meal its worth it!

Also Mama Thira on the lighthouse road at Akrotiri is more affordable and offers very traditional home cooked local foods. You can sit outside of their terrace and look up the length of the caldera.
You must try Fava which is a split lentil dip, and Pseudokeftedes or Tomatokeftedes - tomato balls or courgette balls.
There are also lots of local wineries to visit - most famously the Volcan Winery near to Kamari , Boutari and Santo - the Santo winery - on the corner near to the turn for Pyrgos ,has a huge terrace overlooking the caldera and its free to go and just sit on the terrace or check their gift shop out!
