never had any problems and I think all the hotels I've used have had safes in the room.

Never had a problem, most of the safes you set your own code which only you know.

In Bangkok we had a safe in the room with a code etc, Samui we had a locker behind reception where they just pass you an envelope and reseal it each time, Koh Phanghan - we just had to put our valuables in a see through bag at reception, we were a bit dubious but there were no problems with this although i wouldnt have liked to have risked leaving large amounts of money by this method
