Hiya
I can help with a few of your questions:

Can you hire scooters or motorbikes whilst there?
I don't remember seeing any for hire in the Senegambia area. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend it due to the state of the roads and the driving and the possible poor maintenance/condition of the bikes.

What kind of imported beer do you get?
We only drank local stuff but it was perfectly palatable.

Do you get hassle about drugs? Been to Goa last 5 years and you do there.
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by this - do you want to buy drugs over there or are you worried about being offered them? We weren't directly offered any drugs but a couple of conversations that we had with people indicated that we could have obtained hash some if we had wanted to (we didn't though).

Is there chemists to buy mossie repellent, imodium, headache tabs etc (saves space in my case).
There was a supermarket in the Senegambia area but I can't remember if it sold medicines or not. I think you would probably be able to find some things but the range would not be as wide as at home and the quality may also not be as good (there was a documentary recently on BBC2 about fake/out of date medicines being widely sold in Africa). You should take advice from your doctor about malaria tablets.

Is Sterling Travellers Cheques ok to take or what would you recommend?
I can't remember if we took cash or travellers cheques but we changed money both at a bank and with a money changer. Be aware that, due to the current exchange rate, you will get a very large thick wad of dalasi for your money - make sure you take something to carry it in.

Is there a policy for what females wear whilst outside the hotels?
Gambia is a Muslim country but not as strict as many. The main thing to bear in mind is that the less clothes you wear, the more attention you will get. I tended to wear a long sleeve shirt when we went outside the hotel, partly to avoid unwanted attention and partly to avoid getting sun burnt, but at the hotel there were a number of people sunbathing topless.

HTH!

Hi Corinne76

Thanks for the information.
I am asking about scooters/motorbikes because we hire one in Goa every year and the roads are bad there as well but my partner is an experienced biker and is always very careful - if you can does anyone know what paperwork is required?

Does anyone else know what kind of imported beer there is?

Regarding the drugs, we do not want to buy any, everyone talks about bumsters and was worried if that was what they were trying to offer you.

Does anyone else know if you can exchange travellers cheques ok or please advise as to what you normally take.

Any advice on the hotels would be welcome as well. Sorry to repeat myself but just like to know exactly what I am going to.

Thanks in advance

We stayed at the Sengambia and would definitely recommend it - you can see reviews (including our review) at:
