Went to Morjim on thursday not a shack in sight :( and none appear to be going up, heard a little alleged rumour that " shacks will have to cook the food at home" :yikes food poisioning here we come!! :duh
There was a interview on the local news that local officials are going to be very tough on illegal shacks and they will not be issued with any documentation/electric and anyone shack owner breaking the rules i.e. drugs, staying open later than 11pm will have their licences revoked for 3 years, they are going to stop the beggers/larmis. HAPPY DAYS :rofl

Well I won't be eating anything in a shack then. How long will that have been lying about in the heat?

Surely thats almost impossible as my understanding is that most of the shacks are owned and operated by people from all over India not just Goa.

Went down the beach today - Candolim - Calangute - Baga and the shacks are not built. They have the licence but they have to wait to be given an given area where they can build.
When will you know - don't know - is what we were told - maybe next week.

Thought this was going to be sorted well before the season started instead of the fiasco like last year.
There was a big Hindu festival this week with many domestic tourists visiting the beach and the shacks could have sold drinks and food at Indian prices as they had the licence but they were unable to sell as they could not build the shacks.

Same old - same old - again and again.

What's the state of the beaches like?

Apart from Sinquerim - from the River Princess to the Taj - and Coco Beach, which has virtually disappeared, the other beaches seem to have survived the mosoon quite well. There are very few shacks yet, and those few that are open are mostly keeping a low profile (no signborads, no sunbeds). The tourism deprtnment have issued the shack permits, but the panchayats have yet to give their approval. There has long been a rule that says cooking cannot be done at the shacks. This has always been widely ignored, but some poeple are saying that it may be enforced this season. So, the usual confusion reigns.

A couple of positive signs - garbage collectors are in action on the beach, and there are plenty of highly visible orange shirted lifeguards, and they even have some equipment this time such as an orange jeep which has been driving up and down the beach. This hasn't prevented the usual rash of drownings however, and we can probably expect more over the upcoming Diwali holidays, when the lifeguards all usually go on holiday, just as the beaches get busy.

Don't suppose there's much development in schackbuilding in the South?

Still, will find out in under 3 weeks :D

We went down to Majorda last week and a couple of the shacks were being erected. So they will probably be up and running soon.

does anyone know if Bono has his licence and if so when is he opening?

Lots of shacks under construction now. Most will be open by next weekend. There is still some confusion about the "sunbeds policy", i.e how many are they allowed. Most shacks are so far just putting out 5 pairs. This is enough at the moment, but won't be once the season starts. It's anyone's guess what will happen then, but i wouldn't be surprised if more shacks started charging for sunbeds this season.
